How does Dwayne Bowe rank among the elite WR's?

Sorry, didn't want this getting overlooked in the other thread. Then again, people will probably ignore it anyway - I know some of you will appreciate this.


I keep seeing people say that Dwayne Bowe isn't an elite WR. So I decided to do some research to see how he matches up statistically over his 5 years in the league.

What I found, is that statistically, Bowe is the 10th best WR of the last 5 years.

I found 9 other WR's that either had better yardage totals, better TD numbers or both. He was 10th in yardage, tied for 6th in TD's.

Here's the list. (Yardage/TD's) Bolded players have fewer or same TD's as Bowe.


Larry Fitzgerald - 6480/49

Roddy White - 6422/42

Reggie Wayne - 6234/36

Wes Welker - 6105/31

Calvin Johnson - 5872/49

Andre Johnson - 5703/35

Greg Jennings - 5539/46

Steve Smith - 5353/29

Marques Colston - 5202/40

Dwayne Bowe - 4927/36


Personally, I think that's impressive on its own.

Especially when you consider the only guy on this list who is younger is Megatron. I'd be curious to see how he matches up to the same players during each of their first 5 seasons.

Anyway, when you compare Bowe's number's to the #1 yardage and #1 TD's - he's not nearly as far off as it seems.

It comes down to 19.41 yard a game, and .16 TD's per game.

Factor in that Bowe is missing something the other 9 have - solid QB play.

After looking at this, its hard for me to say Dwayne Bowe is NOT an elite WR, considering how his numbers match up to the "elite" and never having the benefit of decent QB play.

I'm pretty confident in saying that with solid QB play, Bowe would easily make up 19.41 yards and .16 TD's a game.

Like him or not, he's an elite WR - and has shown it over his 5 years in the league.

Dude deserved elite money.

I'd pay bowe $4...but paying him $5 would make us Habitual Overspenders, and people would post pictures of Clark with the caption "Dan Snyder!"...

If fans have that much power, I guess those that are angry just aren't doing enough to change things, and should try harder.

I don't even think this is relevant anymore. I mentioned this few years ago (and some people scoffed at the notion) but it's clear that the NFL owners aren't concerned with the game day experience because the television contracts have made ticket buyers nearly irrelevant.

We don't know what he's asked for.
We don't know what has been offered.

Should the Chiefs give Albert and Dorsey enormous deals that push out both Bowe and Carr? Not only does that seem unlikely, it wouldn't be in line with Pioli's M.O.

So where does this cap savings end up? I'd suggest looking no further than Clark Hunt's wallet.

That's not as awful as it sounds, but I suppose it depends on how far apart the two sides are.

I don't think that any reasonable person would suggest that Bowe be paid more than he's worth. Now sure, that "worth" is probably more to a receiver starved team like the Chiefs but I'm betting on the open market, teams like Denver, Baltimore, Indy, the Giants, Eagles, etc. would "overpay" him.

And that should inform the Chiefs FO?

I don't think that too many Chiefs fans expected Carr to get $10 million per on the open market. And I'm pretty sure they'd be shocked at Bowe's price on the open market as well.

I disagree. Quite a few people thought he'd fetch that kind of contract outside of Kansas City. That's the elephant in the room though. Sometimes a player is singularly focused on hitting the open market. Carr was. Perhaps Bowe is too?

IMO, there was no reason for this to happen. Bowe should have been locked up so the team could move on to 2013 decisions like Albert, Dorsey and of course, a QB.

Hard to say with so many gaps in what we know.
I mean, given your own thoughts about what another organization might do to obtain Bowe...Is it possible that he wants out and has all along?

Once a player enters into his FA year, I'd say the desire for him to test the waters is probably pretty strong, which is exactly why an organization needs to demonstrate foresight at least one year out.

And common sense doesn't apply to how much Bowe is likely asking for? So many are ready to rest on "we don't know..." etc.

So, let's assume you're correct: $10 million dollar difference.

That's $2 million per season for the next five years. The Chiefs are currently $16 million under. They can afford it. And in 2014, the salary cap will increase by about $18 million per team.

With that knowledge, why wouldn't you pay Dwayne Bowe?
