HBO greenlights A Game of Thrones pilot! (spoilers)
EDIT: Changed the original header to mark this as the thread where spoilers are allowed (but not necessarily recommended...). Created a new, spoiler-free thread for Ice and Fire virgins...
This is awesome... Huge, Huge News Nov. 11th, 2008 at 10:29 PM HBO has given the production order. They will be filming the pilot episode of A GAME OF THRONES. It's just the pilot so far. They'll need to see that before they decide whether to proceed with a full season's episodes. So let's all hope the pilot will kick serious ass. It should. David Benioff and Dan Weiss did a terrific job with the script. And yes, all of you can relax, it's very faithful. Dan and David will be the executive producers for the pilot and (we hope) the eventual series. More details when I have 'em. The news is very fresh. HBO just issued their own press release, which should be up on their website soon, if it's not there already. Winter is coming to HBO. Hot damn. Last edited by keg in kc; 04-25-2011 at 03:58 PM.. |

Yes. I really don't know how they'll come close to fitting it all in. Starting to wonder if season 1 won't cover the entire 1st book.

I'm still having trouble keeping up with some of the names and connections.
I could tell the blonde D-bag was going to meet a bad end with his antics and knew the Khal would eventually have enough and pull his guts out or something. The last episode, the caught me off guard a couple of times....I didn't see the betrayal of Stark coming.. So...who is the dumbass who wanted the wilding girl to call him Lord? It's early in the story, but I think I'm hoping that Drogo and his horde of barbarians gut the entire Lannister family except the Midget...I kind of like him. |

His father is lord of the Iron Isles, and he was taken as a "ward" after Ned Stark and others beat down the iron isles in an uprising.

By the way, for those that have HBO On Demand access (I have it through Comcast), HBO has a ton of GoT mini-sodes that would be helpful for noobs to get up to speed.
This weekend I watched ones for House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen, and the Night's Watch. They give more background than what the TV show has been able to cover thus far. |

Yeah, even while reading the books I had to have two bookmarks: one at the front of the book for the map of Westeros, and one at the back for the appendix of houses and their members.

This is a series that will bear up to repeated viewings, especially for those who haven't read the books. Most who haven't read the books are likely missing a ton of stuff that's going on (as evidenced by GoChiefs finding those middle episodes boring, while those who have read the books found them riveting). A lot of the time, the significance of certain conversations and scenes is lost on those without the knowledge of what's to come. This is a really good thing, imo. Far too much TV doesn't encourage repeated viewings. Good "art" should. This is good art.

Yeah, I don't know. The episode, to me, showed that Sam had convinced Jon of the truth to the scenario he proposed. Jon wasn't arguing anymore, and he seemed plenty happy to take his vows.
And as for Samwell Tarley, I just now realized that he's analagous to Samwise Gamgee. GRRM is better than I give him credit for sometimes.

Starks.
Their greatest strength is their honorable nature, which inspires admiration and love from those who follow them. It's also their greatest weakness. I can't count the number of times while reading Game of Thrones/the entire series/even watching the season so far that I've stopped and though "Damn the Starks and their honor!" Seeing Drogo own it on-screen really makes the character come alive more for me than in the novel. Momoa is doing a nice job.

For a non-book reader, feel free to spoil me on this limited point. Is there any import to, not just a ginger, but a 'Perez Hilton sitting on the dias at the State of the Union' ginger being part of the North Watch?

Bright redheads are considered somewhat lucky in ASOIAF's world. They are considered to be "kissed by fire." There are also some important gingers throughout the books, so stay tuned.
