Malaysia Airlines loses contact with plane carrying 239 people
Malaysia Airlines says it has lost contact with a plane with 239 aboard enroute from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.
The airline said in a statement early Saturday it was attempting to locate the Boeing 777 after it lost contact with Subang Air Traffic Control at 2:40 a.m. It was scheduled to land in Beijing at 6:30 a.m. China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported the plane was lost in airspace controlled by Vietnam, and did not make contact with Chinese air traffic controllers. The plane is carrying 227 passengers, including two infants, and 12 crew members. The airline said it is working with authorities to locate the plane. Boeing said on its Twitter account it is monitoring the situation, and "our thoughts are with everyone on board." http://www.foxnews.com/world/2014/03...ing-23-people/ Malaysian jet probe sharpens focus on passengers, crew as new clues emerge http://www.foxnews.com/world/2014/03...-indian-ocean/ Last edited by ShowtimeSBMVP; 03-15-2014 at 09:02 AM.. |

Guy on Face the Nation just said a US ship with the good listening equipment heading that way to where the Chinese think they heard the signal. Still a couple of hours away.

My skeptical side wonders if the Chinese aren't doing this just to learn about and test our deepwater listening capabilities. And by 'this', I might mean the fake pings and I might mean the whole airplane disappearance.

The Aussies are about to hold a press conference.
I think some reporter outside mentioned that the British ship had heard pings near where the Chinese ship did. However, I just barely caught it, so maybe he was just speculating.

The Australian ship Ocean Shield has confirmed black box signals. It got them for two hours, then lost it. It then got two more pings after that.
This is not the location where the Chinese ship is. It's a separate incident. He stressed that they haven't confirmed that it's the plane yet, and they've lost the signal again.

The Ocean Shield is working north/northeast of the Chinese ship. It looks like it might be about 300 miles north, but it's hard to read the map. The guy's holding it and waving it around. I don't know how far away the pingers can be heard, but they're not discounting the Chinese ship's observations.

It sounds like they're pretty sure they're in the right area, though he keeps stressing that it's preliminary. It's still a reasonably large area, but it's small enough that you can at least imagine that they may find this thing. Whether it's a matter of days or months (or years?) depends on how long the batteries last.

They're saying that the next steps are to:
1) Try to re-detect the signal. 2) Use a UAV to do a sonar of the ocean floor to see if they see anything that looks like wreckage. However, the depth in this region is right at the edge of the UAV's capabilities, so it's going to be tough. 3) If they see something that looks promising on the sonar, they'll put a camera on a remotely piloted vehicles and go looking. I don't know if they can do analysis of the two hours of pings to help with an analysis. He said that it's unlikely that the Chinese and Australian ships could be hearing the same pinging, but said that weird things happen with temperature layering in the deep ocean, so he's not counting anything out.
