I think that the bulk of the 'controversy' comes, first from preconceptions regarding Robben, and second the 'theatricality' of Robben spreading his arms dramatically as he's already going to ground from the trip. IMO, how he reacts after he's been tripped and going to ground is irrelevant. I've reacted similarly and it had nothing to do with attracting the ref's attention, it is expressing frustration that my defender beating move so close to goal was thwarted, regardless of whether it was inside or outside the rules. Kind of like how WRs will take a few frustrated jumps when the ball escapes their grasp on a long gainer.

Based on a clear history of diving. I mean...that is obvious no? I am fine calling this penalty not strongly going to bat on this play but people didn't feel this way about Robben out of thin air.

That's a fair point. I can see why some people don't like the PK format. What I'm waiting for is another legitimate option. Letting them play forever is not a legitimate option at this level of soccer. If the game went 4-5 hrs(and you know some would)then you can just go ahead and eliminate the winning team from the next round. PK seems to be the best way to avoid that.

Problem is, that's not what soccer is about. Who wants to see sloppy soccer played by exhausted players? Not me, that's not beautiful.

As far as getting rid of offsides, maybe NFL receivers shouldn't be flagged for offsides either.

Nah, AR got clearly fouled in the penalty box (back to back fouls actually) in the first half that didn't get called. That was actually way higher on the bullshit scale than the late penalty.

The Netherlands deserved that win, nobody got ****ed.
