If the Chiefs go 8-8 or better 49ers get a 2nd round pick.
A third- or second-rounder from Kansas City, the remnant of the Alex Smith deal. Now it can be told: The second draft choice San Francisco will receive from the Smith deal will be K.C.'s second-rounder in 2014 if the Chiefs go 8-8 or better this season. It will be a third-rounder in 2014 if Kansas City is under .500 this season.
So: San Francisco will probably have first-, second- and four third-rounders next year. But if the Chiefs surprise, it'll more likely be a one, two twos and three threes. As we've seen, GM Trent Baalke is dangerous with extra picks in his hands. If Colin Kaepernick is very good, the Niners should be annual contenders for years with the picks laid out that way. [I tried posting a video of Smith's 2006 season, but I'm not allowed to yet. If you search on youtube for: "2006 Alex Smith highlights", it's the first video.] Look at that video and tell me if you recognize the guy? That's Smith in his 2nd season before the major shoulder injury and with Norv Turner as offensive coordinator (i.e. the guy who likes to go deep). It's like a totally different guy out there. There are more deep balls in this video than either the 2011 or 2012 season. A lot of the Smith checkdown stuff has a lot to do with the mental aspect of extreme ball security, but quite frankly the Harbaugh era was nothing spectacular from a purely passing context. In fact, Smith's redzone production in 2011 and 2012 were not his career best despite more appearances in the redzone. He actually was very good in the redzone. The running game in SF is like a reincarnation of the west coast offense from the ground perspective....and that was before the pistol was unleashed. The OL in SF is top notch in run game, but not elite in pass protection. If the Chiefs can manage to run the ball as well as the 49ers did, that would be very promising, because it looks like pass protection will be better in Kansas City. 5.82 ypc from Jamaal Charles....NFL record....yeah, just like Fisher is his new Staley, Charles is his new Gore. I trust Reid to do his thing. He'll find the right balance to make it work. As for Smith, this is a brand new team which could mean good things in the intangibles department. I think the high point for him was the Saints playoff victory, then after that it was the same thing all over again for him except in much subtler ways. Should be very interesting. The good news is Reid knows the NFC East very well, so I'm sure he'll come up with some great game plans to smash those teams. |

He wasn't a checkdown king BEFORE the MAJOR SHOULDER INJURY

He needs to steal some of Peydaton's new favorite snack of unborn fetuses and he'll dominate

Second, there were several writers who had actually watched Smith once Jimmy Raye was shown the door in SF, that felt he was worth a 1st. So while that didn't happen, it does show that for folks who recognized what a short deck he had in this first 6 years, he did play like a top 10 QB for 1.5 years. Looking only at Smith's numbers in Harbaugh's offense is deceptive. He made plays when he needed to and the rest of the time the 49ers just pounded the ball down the field behind the best OL in the game. In the meantime, the only reliable downfield target he had was Crabtree and he is not a burner and can be taken out of the game with a safety over the top. Reid is not going to play that way, especially with the greater range of receivers here. |

Last year he looked like shit with Daboll. Pretty sure Andy Reid is known for making QB's look better then they are. But I'm sure you already knew that.

I don't think that is true. The stat that he loses more often when he throws most is misinterpreted by most of you. The real reason for that stat is that when a team is behind they throw more. And when they are behind they often lose. You guys make it sound like they lose because he throws it more, instead of him throwing it more because they are losing, which is disingenuous.

Before the shoulder injury he was getting the ball deep down the field a lot more, and he still had that youthful exuberance about him. He can still physically get the ball the distance, but it takes more of a windup than it used to. |

You guys are hilarious. One is claiming if Alex Smith was a good QB they would have had to use a first to get him, and you are claiming that they did use a first to get him.

Reid is the most overrated "QB guru" ever.

Might as well have kept Cassel then. Why spend two 2nds on an 8th year quarterback that still needs to be coached up?

With a good team, Smith will win games.....a good amount of them. Question remains if he can get a team to the super bowl. We were supposed to find out last year, and that plan got cut short. |

Again, Reid really seems to like Smith, and thinks he's the best QB for the Chiefs, and for him, better than Cassel, better than Geno. Either he's going to be right, or a handful of fans on a Chiefs message board that really wanted a QB, any QB at 1.1 are right. We'll see.
