He's a young QB, guys

The guy is 23. Tom Brady was still being forced to suck Drew Bledsoe's dick at that age. Peyton Manning was throwing more INTs than TDs.

We're going to be fine. Mahomes is going to be ****ing way better than fine.

We're asking perfection of the boy right now. People aren't even holding him to a Rodgers standard because some of the turnovers from Mahomes last night are things Rodgers does on occasion as well.
I don't really agree. Rodgers does hold the ball but he also has outstanding footwork and pocket awareness. Mahomes is still a little raw, as well as he's played. We aren't expecting perfection. We're just acknowledging that he's making mistakes today he should develop out of. Everyone "criticizing" him here also acknowledges he played a fantastic game even with the turnovers.

He has room to get better. Rodgers at this point in his career probably won't. That mahomes can get even better from a standout performance is exciting.

Wut?

Schwartz has his back turned to Mahomes and it was a split second INT. I don’t get blaming him for that.

JFC that’s a low bar for the defense if you don’t think they were a primary factor in the Chiefs losing last night.

The Chiefs up 51-47, Scandrick drops a gimme INT right in his hands and then Sorensen is torched for the game winning TD.

He. Got. Hit.

Why SHOULDN'T Reid have looked to win it in regulation? Mahomes was absolutely feeling it. He was moving the ball and had been since the first drive of the game (a drive killed by a phantom penalty).

The Chiefs had a punt in the first that require a phantom block call and a false start. Then they had a FG that would've been a TD but/for a whiffed block from Kelce. They had one genuinely bad drive in the 3rd (with the reversed 'TD' on the deflection) and then another punt in the 4th after Kelce dropped a 1st down pass.

The Chiefs offense was wrecking the Rams 3 times out of 4. And the failures were largely self-inflicted. The Chief had just come up with a great play and had every reason to believe they could punch that in; they'd done it 6 times already.

Playing for ties is Herm and Alex shit and those days are dead and gone. We had the Rams on their heels and a QB that was feeling it. He had a man downfield and with just an Nth more space I think he completes it.

And again - people are already showing they don't have the stomach for it. We have people shaming our 23 yr old QB for not playing for a tie on the road. "HE SHOULD'VE JUST CHECKED DOWN!!!" That's just wrong.

Andy was right to go for the win. Pat was right to be aggressive in pursuit of same. But the other guys get paid to play as well and they got to Pat as he was releasing the ball - shit happens.

I hope if the Chiefs find themselves in the same situation in January that Mahomes has the balls to play for the win because more often than not, he'll get it. Playing for the tie walked out the door with the last of our 20+ years of game-managing purgatory. It wasn't the right play in this instance. Playing for the win wasn't the wrong one just because it didn't work.

Did you miss the fact that it was the defender who Schwartz was blocking who was able to get his arm up and tip the ball and ultimately make the INT?

His brother talked about that on Twitter. It's a RPO, so I'm not really sure how they're supposed to block it though.

Just a weird ass play.

You guys are dreaming think it hit him right in the hands and it was NO GIMME. The guy leaped as high as he could on a great pass and made a good play to prevent a catch. He barely got his fingertips on it and the WR made a good play to knock it out. It would have taken a GREAT play to catch that.

You need to watch that replay. Maybe Clay to dial it up on CP

No, several really aren't. There are plenty of people saying he needs to be more like Alex and that he's the reason we lost that game.

The first sack/strip was particularly bad so if you want to say that one is on Mahomes, I'll give you that. His drop was too deep and instead of going forward he went sideways. Those are two no-nos but I won't say that Rodgers doesn't do them - he absolutely does. He just does them less frequently than Mahomes.

The 2nd sack/strip would absolutely happen to Rodgers. That wasn't an example of bad pocket presence, just an example of less than stellar presence. And it's one that happens to guys all the time. Brady has the best clock in his head of any QB I've ever seen and we got to him at least once (maybe twice) on plays that were extremely similar to that one.

We're being too damn hard on the kid. He's 23 - he's going to make mistakes. But this "He needs to X" shit has got to stop. He needs to play. He needs to keep doing what he's doing and with that he'll likely become the best quarterback in football if he isn't already.

Bagging on the guy for not being the best traits of all the best quarterbacks in football wrapped into one is bizarre. He didn't play a perfect game but again - the greats play their best games maybe 2-3 times/season. He's at that level. And no matter how good he EVER gets, he'll have bad games.

So to call that some kind of indictment on his development or to start making demands as to what he needs to be is just wrongheaded. You can criticize individual plays he made but to try to say they're somehow predictive or an overarching example of flaws in him is going too far. All quarterbacks make mistakes, they all have bad games.

Pat's 'bad game' is 500 yards of offense and 6 TDs and we have people saying "He should've played for the tie!!!!"

Unreal.

Agree. Have no problem going for the win. The way the Rams were moving the ball late...if they won the coin toss in OT they are getting a quick TD anyway.

Mahomes is going to win more than his fair share of those situations...you cannot expect him to get every single one.

True - I overlooked the footwork claim and focused on the pocket presence.

Remember 2 years ago when people were trying to shovel dirt on Rodgers early in the year? To a man the complaint was that his age has made his arm less capable of overcoming his 'unconventional' footwork.

You're absolutely right - Rodgers is a textbook case of how to play quarterback in some ways but he has some of the least conventional footwork of any QB in the league and if you're going to call Mahomes footwork bad, you have no choice but to say the same about Rodgers. They're very similar.

Fine maybe not a “gimme”, but an INT that a veteran NFL CB needs to make.

Throwing off platform is what they do. It works and is awesome most of the time. But it gets you sometimes.

We always talked about it and wondered if Chiefs fans would actually have the stomach to go thru the development of a QB. Well, there you go. Here it is.

The one they have is developing at a faster rate than 90% of NFL QB's and we've got people losing their minds.

I was always against the whole "10-6, a good D and BBQ in the parking lot " argument but that's just what some fans want. It's fine to want it, but it's just wrongheaded anymore.

Was it really?

I put it on Schwartz because I figured that was a designed slot-screen sort of play. In that case, Schwartz has to get the old 'nut block' where you get low and force the DL's hands down.

But if it was an RPO, you're absolutely right - there's not much more that Schwartz could've done because he has to be prepared to actually run block that play. I guess you could argue that he has the same read keys that Patrick and maybe he should've read the pass, but a lot of those are true judgment calls. Maybe either decision was defensible.

Like I said - that's an incomplete pass 99 times out of 100 - I have literally NEVER seen that.
