*****OFFICIAL Chiefs OL Thread*****

http://espn.go.com/blog/kansas-city-...is-has-surgery

Quote:
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Some observations on the first day of offseason practice for the Kansas City Chiefs:

The Chiefs are short at tight end after backup Demetrius Harris again had surgery on a broken foot that shortened his 2014 season. Coach Andy Reid indicated Harris’ initial surgery didn’t take, forcing the need for another procedure. “The natural grafting that normally takes place when you put a screw in there didn’t take place,’’ Reid said. “So they went in and they grafted it and they represented a screw in the bones there and we’ll see how he does. [The doctors] feel pretty confident about this.’’ Reid said he was confident Harris would be able to return for the start of training camp in July. Until then, the Chiefs have only Travis Kelce as a proven player at tight end. The others getting snaps with the starters in practice were journeyman Richard Gordon and rookie James O’Shaughnessy, a fifth-round draft pick. It might be a stretch to believe O’Shaughnessy, who played at Illinois State, can provide immediate help. “Up to this point, he’s done very well,’’ Reid said. “I’ll be curious to see as we keep giving him things how he handles it. Once we put pads on, that will be another test."

The Chiefs went with a starting offensive line of left tackle Eric Fisher, left guard Ben Grubbs, center Eric Kush, right guard Jeff Allen and right tackle Donald Stephenson. Also of note, Zach Fulton, who started last season at guard, was working as the backup center. Rookie Mitch Morse, a second-round pick, handled all of the center snaps in a seven-on-seven drill but was the third-team right guard in full-squad drills. Reid cautioned not to make much of the lineup. “We’re going to find the five best guys,’’ he said. “It’s open competition.''

Reid indicated safety Eric Berry has completed his treatment for lymphoma. "He’s going to get his big end-of-the-school exam done,'' Reid said. "He’s been through all the treatments. Now the doctor is going to sit down with him and go over exactly what the results of that are.''

The Chiefs were missing two defensive starters, safety Husain Abdullah and lineman Allen Bailey. Reid said both had travel problems because of the heavy rain in Texas and couldn’t get back to Kansas City in time. “They’re trying to make their way back here,’’ Reid said.

Linebacker Derrick Johnson didn’t look like someone who missed all but the season opener last year because of a torn Achilles tendon. Johnson moved around like he did before the injury. “As far as being explosive and running, I’m there,’’ Johnson said. “I’ve got to get the mental part down again. It’s like riding a bike. I’ll get there. I’m very confident in myself.’'

we kept more guys back to protect against the deep pass. We did that because we didn't have guys that constantly handle it.

That hurt our defending the short pass and the run.

If we get better CB play it should help the entire defense.

I would also suggest that Sean Smith's performance was a bit inflated because the opposite side of the field was so weak.

This.

I had every confidence in Sean Smith, in fact, I took notice to his shut down status pretty early.

Also had confidence in the potential of Ron Parker and Philip Gaines. They flashed quite a bit, especially Parker, but we're still prone to the occasional mistake that comes with inexperience.

Hell, even Sorenson fit that Bill.

Abdullah and Berry were fine, both dependable, yet unspectacular. Nothing to worry about between the two of them.

It was Owens, Fleming that worried me most. Anything depth wise really. Fleming played pretty well in very limited action, not sure why so many are ready to crown him.

Point being, we had a lot of guys all capable of stepping in and helping out, but nobody was really a world beater outside of Smith. They were all helped a lot by the pass rush.

Take that base to build from, add an enforcer like Peters and a little pitbull like Nelson and we should be looking very pretty this season.

[QUOTE]Two years ago, the Kansas City Chiefs invested the No. 1 overall pick in Central Michigan's Eric Fisher. Now during the team's 2015 organized team activities, the offensive tackle has been working with the second team, according to the Kansas City Star's Terez A. Paylor.

During the first week of OTAs, Fisher has worked behind Donald Stephenson, a former third-round pick who has played mostly at right tackle thus far in his career. Stephenson last protected the blindside in 2013, when he started four games.

However, Kansas City head coach Andy Reid was quick to note that the switch at left tackle has nothing to do with Fisher's performance to date.

"That's the only way you can get Donald some reps there," Reid argued. "We want to make sure we've got everybody covered. Actually, Fish has done a very nice job, so I wouldn't read anything into that. We're staying consistent."

Despite Reid's claims, Fisher's play during his first two seasons has left a lot to be desired. He has yielded an average of seven sacks and over 40 total pressures per year as measured by Pro Football Focus, both among the worst totals for left tackles.[QUOTE]

During the first week of OTAs, Fisher has worked behind Donald Stephenson, a former third-round pick who has played mostly at right tackle thus far in his career. Stephenson last protected the blindside in 2013, when he started four games.

"Nom nom nom nom," Reid argued between bites of another ham sandwich. "We want to make sure our asses are covered after blowing that pick. Actually, Fish has done a very nice job and by nice job I mean he voluntarily cleans the team weight room toilets every time he gives up a pressure, so you can bet those ****ers are sparkling clean. We're staying consistent."

Despite Reid's claims, Fisher's play during his first two seasons has been nothing short of flaming AIDS. He has yielded an average of seven sacks and over 40 total pressures per year as measured by Pro Football Focus, both among the worst totals for left tackles.
Fixed.

What the hell is the correlation between deep throws and interceptions? And if you watched the games last season, you would know DBs on this team dropped more than their fair share of INTs.

And saying "A unit is ****ed if they lose their best player who's playing at an elite level" isn't exactly shocking.

Fact still remains that the Chiefs were second in pass defense. They allowed the 2nd lowest completion percentage in the NFL. Regardless of how good the pass rush is, DBs still have to do their job when the ball is thrown. And they did do their jobs very well, to the tune of 58.35% completion.

And lets stop acting like teams were just running the ball at the Chiefs defense every play. The Chiefs were 15th in pass attempts against them and 16th in passing play percentage. Teams were balanced attacking the Chiefs.

So weak that we still didn't allow a single 300 yard passer.

Seriously, if we were so weak on that side, QBs would have attacked it all day and at least one QB would have come out with a 300 yard game. And yet...

After Cooper got benched, players on both sides of the field played well. Whether it was Fleming or Gaines, they both held their own.

I would disagree with this completely. Smith made great plays on the ball, deflecting many passes, near interceptions and blanket coverage.

It was probably 5 games in that I started taking note of his play. Dude killed it.
