It has been well documented that Hammel struggle mightily at the 3rd time in order. I mean, even FSKC showed a graphic that his ERA is .350 on the 3rd time. And on top of that, Beltre was a probability to be facing him if he gave up a hit.

Yes, he gave up his first hit of the game in the 6th, but again, he is facing the line up for the 3rd time. Eventually it was going to go downhill. And yes, I would had pulled him had he gave up a hit, considering his history of struggling on the 3rd time, and was facing the heart of the lineup on a 3-0 game. (If this was a 5-0 game, then I would most likely would have given him an additional leash).

Maddon recognized that when Hammel was with the Cubs, and didn't hesitate to pull him when things started to go wrong on a tight game, regardless of the opponent.
