Buehler is spot on again. I think home schooling is a terrible idea. I’ve never met a successful person who was home schooled and most are just weird as ****. The social aspect of any school is VERY important for adulthood success.

You've just had limited exposure to homeschooling, I can assure you that.

We homeschooled, my oldest daughter graduated top of her class, several full ride offers, all while she worked full time, paid off a brand new car with no help from mom and dad.

She did volunteer work and still found time for friends - she had more people at her graduation than almost all of her pub school friends.

The stereotype you harbor of homeschooling is very, well "1990". It's MUCH more common now - in fact, areligious homeschooling (which is what we did) outnumbers religious homeschooling in many areas of the country.

Our homeschooling group here wields enough power that we openly draw attacks from the school district. We're cutting into their funding. We've essentially built a social network that completely replaces classroom interaction, while giving kids a higher quality education in 1/3 the amount of time.

On my end of things, I don’t intend to speak for Lew, but it takes the right person and probably the right kids to homeschool. It isn’t for everyone and it probably isn’t for the people that are going to pull their kids because of a mask.

Take the right person and the right kids in the right situation and homeschooling can definitely outperform a public school. But that’s not necessarily a given.

For sure.

However, the number of parents able to pull it off is growing. Most of our schools around here have completely abandoned anything that develops academics beyond the "average". There's a lot of really smart kids out there and more and more of them are seeking online learning, early college, and homeschooling because the public schools are too busy teaching "up" to the median.

That's why our local district is so adamant that homeschooling is terrible for kids. Because we're not just taking their students, we're taking their BEST students.

Well, I'm not taking it personally because I also know a lot of home school kids who never should have been home schooled. I've met several parents who said they were home schooling and I could tell they didnt know their ass from their elbow.

But, my wife was a kindergarten teacher and I've done everything from 3rd grade to algebra. So we've got the academics covered pretty well. Side note: my 3 year old reads many books that are a 3rd grade level and infinitely more at every level below that. She has high comprehension and incredible memory but we dont test her because that's part of what's wrong with public schools.

As for socially, while I could argue about the amount of real socialization happening at school, I will instead tell you the social things my 3 year old daughter currently does. She goes to a weekly story time at a library where another adult is in charge and many other children around her age attend (and their parents, so lots of adult interaction as well). She used to go to a program that did hands on steam activities for toddlers/pre schoolers that had a 'teacher' leading the instruction. Once again, lots of kids and adults. That did get discontinued. Another program we occasionally attend is called tinkergarten. Similar to the last one but more nature oriented, you can look that up on google if you'd care to. Lastly for the purposes of this discussion, she does taekwondo in a class with somewhere around 4 instructors and up to about 10 kids ranging from 4-6.

As for being weird as ****, I hope my kids are 'weird'. A lot of school minimizes the differences between kids and tries to push out 'little toy soldiers'. Most teachers dont want kids to ask why or question what they are teaching, my wife and I encourage those things. (I know what you mean by weird as **** and that's not really the weird I'm talking about but I've already discussed the social issue which is what you are referring to.)

Finally, neither my wife or I are insured which I guess is scary but I dont find it to be, probably because the only insurance I've ever had was a HDHP which I had to pay $5000 OOP before insurance really did anything (I'm fairly certain I can negotiate a rate reasonably on par with what the insurance company 'allowed', besides the fact that a lot of places already do an uninsured discount.) My kids are covered through CHIP so I pay a reduced premium for them. I make a thousand dollar mortgage payment every month, have a 2 year old car we bought new, and have never paid interest on a credit card because we pay them off in full each month. And this is with me working as a bus driver with a part time job during non driving hours since the last school year ended. So I dont think its impossible for you, maybe just improbable with your current situation.

CV19 was the best thing that happened to me as far as teaching. I liked it. Some of the kids liked it. We need a better system of showing attendance.

Kids could click something-but it does not prove they actually looked at anything I put together. If we have to do this in fall, there needs to be changes. We are hearing that many kids liked the idea and did well. Mostly because they do not have to put up with others crap. I told a few I would be willing to do online classes instead of going back to the classroom.

As of now, I have to be in the same building as before. I am still looking at other options. I am really glad I was not in school for the last race based thing. Some of the issues is that I am white, 50, expect discipline and order. So therefore I am a bad person with some black students. I cant change what I look like-they cant either. But if the goal is education-it works. If the goal is social time-it won't. Fall is a big question like it is for most places.

When CV19 hit, I had already been out for 3-4 weeks. I was relaxed but my mind was still in the school crap. Distance learning helped me be a teacher without stress. I always enjoy summer. I work a little and get jobs done around the house. I have done a lot in the last few days. Wife and I hope to get away sometime.

District hopes to have a plan by July 15.
