I think the biggest issue is the Bucs never made a big investment at QB (iirc) until he was gone. Was it his fault? I'm not sure.

He did the same thing in Tampa as he did in Oakland: Recommend Bruce Allen and create another version of the "Over The Hill Gang".

It took the Raiders 14 years to recover and the Bucs haven't been in the playoffs since a 2007 WC loss to the Giants.

They lost in the WC round in 2005, too.

Gruden sucks.

Dick Vermiel re-entered the league well before Jon Gruden retired.

The NFL has changed exponentially in just the last 10 years and every person on this board has acknowledged it. If Dick Vermiel or Al Saunders tried to saunter back onto the sideline, they'd lose 14 games.

Football from the late 90s looks positively paleolithic compared to what we see today. The amount of study, the reams of information, the advanced metrics and 'hidden data' that's everywhere for these guys to find now is light years beyond what he was when Gruden was still coaching.

He'd be dropped into the deep end of the pool and I don't think he'd be close to prepared for it. He could be bad teams with inexperienced coaching staffs still feeling their way, but he'd get eviscerated by every veteran coaching staff he runs into.

Dick Vermeil went 5-11 and 4-12 in his first two seasons back from his hiatus.

Ownership and John Shaw forced changes on his coaching staff, traded for Marshall Faulk, signed Trent Green and drafted Torry Holt.

And after winning the Super Bowl, they forced him out.

The guy won a championship because his assistant didn't bother to change the terminology in Oakland after he took over the team. That's the NFL that Gruden left. The NFL he tries to re-enter will eat his ass alive.

He's gotten way too comfortable with his TV gig, IMO. He wouldn't have the drive to do the job right.
Theres a lot of truth to what you said about his championship. Once the stage was set after the championship games the outcome was over.

Very dumb and lazy on Oaklands part after trading Gruden
Ok, so you want to keep things exactly the same (as it had worked well).
Grudens now in the NFC.
Gruden and his former staff were still friends so the likelihood of Gruden sabotaging them for using the exact same terminology was extremely low.
SO the only possible way this could come back to bite you in the ass is if you somehow end up playing against Gruden. Well hopefully if that ever happens it would be in a meaningless game like in preseason or something.

Gruden is an intriguing candidate. He's a much more interesting candidate than, say, Cowher.

Gruden has actually been relentlessly studying the spread so he's been a student of the game while he's been out. And he still has a terrific network -- keep in mind that he was the one who recommended Sutton to Andy Reid, so I love me some Gruden. And obviously, he's been studying draft prospects for years.

There's no doubt he can still coach players. But dude has a ton of clout to recruit an all star coaching staff and would install a very modern offense. Would be cool to see the guy get another shot.

Jets assistant coaches meltdown

The New York Jets' coaching-staff shake-up is underway.

Chan Gailey, who served as Todd Bowles' offensive coordinator the past two seasons, announced his retirement Tuesday.
His departure was expected.

Gailey, in a statement released by the team, said he informed Bowles before the season that this would be his final year. Gailey will turn 65 years old on Thursday.

In addition, Bowles fired five position coaches: Kevin Patullo (quarterbacks), Marcel Shipp (running backs), Pepper Johnson (defensive line), Mark Collins (outside linebackers) and Joe Danna (defensive backs).

More changes could happen. For now, defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers and special-teams coordinator Brant Boyer remain.

Other than Shipp, 4 of those 5 guys are Parcells guys. Rodgers is too. Another Parcells failed circle jerk. What a surprise.

In addition to interviewing with the Jaguars for their head coaching vacancy, Bucs defensive coordinator Mike Smith will interview with the Chargers for their head coach position, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.
