I stole a little fridge magnet from the ace hardware at ranchmart on 95th once when I was like 10 with my mom. The bitch found out and drove me all the way back and made me hand it back and apologize infront of a full line of customers. lol. It was very demoralizing but I learned my lesson. I still steal food from my friends fridges from now and then.
Sell the xbox and make him return the game to his friends family in person. He needs to learn right now that that kinda sh*t aint acceptable |

When I was 6 or 7 years old, I stole a little Gobot toy from K-Mart. When we left K-Mart, we went to TG&Y across town. In between the two, I started to feel super guilty about what I'd done. I was so scared of punishment from my parents, that I ended up leaving the Gobot at the TG&Y store. So I effectively reduced K-Mart's Gobot inventory by 1, and increased TG&Y's Gobot inventory by one. I always wondered if that mystery ever showed up on some silly inventory report...

Don't take the XBOX away permanately, just hide it for a couple/few months. When he asks where it went, tell him a friend of yours got his house robbed and lost his XBOX, so you're letting the friend borrow yours.

Shame the shit out of him, make him go over and apologize to their whole family. My mom did something like that when my brother was like 6 and stole a pack of gum. Squash it now.

Game is already returned to his friend. And I told his parents beforehand to say that they are very disappointed in him and that he is not welcome to their house for awhile. But, that they think he is a good guy, but that he made a bad decision.
I really think the XBOX should be sold. So, it's going on Craigslist. The only problem is, is that my daughter gets vicariously punished and she didn't do anything. She loves playing the dance games on the XBOX kinect. |

Punishing the other kids is the one part of smashing it I hadn't really considered.
I think you don't take it from them....you ban him from using it for a month for each instance of theft. |

I immediately planned on going over there with him to return the game, as well. And we did that. Option #4 I deleted his gamertag... and deleted the other gamertags except for his sister's. Her gamertag is an offline tag that is also locked down with a password that only I know... and have a timer on there for 45 minutes max. STILL WEIGHING the selling of the XBOX. I'm trying to minimize the scar tissue that parents instill in their kid's psyche... |

I'd also make sure that you don't just give into him after a couple of months. |

Part of this has been a lapse in parenting and establishing consistent boundaries coupled with the fact that the child is too young to be playing "M" games. You say he is too young to play those games and won't pay for them but you allowed him to keep and have access to one when one magically appeared. Plus he has had access to the internet and your credit card and the Xbox with improper supervision. And yet he is the problem here?
Take away the Xbox and make a plan to start making better parenting choices. Last edited by memyselfI; 02-05-2013 at 03:10 PM.. |

Not sure why. If you have ever watched an episode of Supernanny or worked with children you know a good portion of a child's misbeavior is lax, impproper, or incoonsistent parenting. I think in cases where children make the type of mistakes listed here it is 99% the parents fault because there are passwords, parental controls, and other safeguards parents fail to use to limit or restrict their child's use of technology as well as monitoring their use.
Hold the kid responsible for his choices but some introspection on the parents actions is also needed.
