What's your favorite wine?

For us wine drinkers, I'm curious about your favorite "drinking" wine (as in, something uner $15 a bottle).

I'm partial to the 2002 Hill of Gold Shiraz (Rosemont Estates) and the 2002 Coppola Premium Claret. Right now, I'm drinking a 2003 Coppola Zin.

Just got back from Napa Valley. Rubicon 2003 from Francis Ford Coppola's winery was the best I tasted. The 2003 Cask cabernet was also good. Both a little pricey.

I have red wines from time to time, but I'm not too knowledgeable of what constitutes a good wine. I like wines that aren't too bitter and not too sweet.

I like trying new wines, pinot noir & cabs top the list in type. Not a favorite name that I always reach for, in fact - most times I try to grab one I've never had before.

Just bought a great wine for $16. It was rated as 1 of Wine Spectator's best value wines (91 points.) Gordon Bros. Columbia Valley Merlot 2005

Earlier this year I stumbled across a deal for 2000 Mondavi Private Reserve Cab for $30 instead of over $100. Rated 92 by both WS and WE.

It was OK. Worth the $30 but not much more.

Bevmo has a good deal on Langtry Meritage Red Wine '04 (750 ML) for $39.99 for the first bottle and 5 cents for the 2nd. (They will actually sell you 1 bottle for 1/2 price.)

The Plaza 3 sells this bottle for $80 or 90. It is good for $20.

There is a lot of mark-up in wine. The distibutor, wholesaler and retailer all take a cut. This is why people liked 2 buck chuck so much. It went straight to the retailer. People get a $8 bottle for $2.

The best deals are from the lesser known brands. Find a good wine shop who knows what you like and they will guide you to great wines for close to $20. Usually closer to $15.

Or really, any Malbec under $15. I just love the stuff.

Same on the $20-40 range, but I'm not sure if that's a function of the wines I'm buying in that range, or my novice palate.

I have been a fan of this cab since the article was ran about Vermeil's winery. I have not purchased the first bottle, but my boss has bought quite a few for me as gifts, since I like it so well. The 2000 is really very nice now.

One of my other favorites, which I have enjoyed a lot is Freemark Abbey. I drink primarily cabs, and this is incredible but a little pricey.

Franciscan Oakville Estates is a very nice Cab with an obvious Oaky taste for just around $20.

can anyone recommend some reasonable Pinot Noirs?

I hear it is a favorite grape of many, and an interesting wine, but it seems to be a more expensive wine as well...

You can get into a decent Pinot for around $15, but the better ones will probably be $20 or better. It's a function of it being a pretty hard grape to grow. Personally, I prefer the old-world style Pinots to the American fruit bombs. A few that I can reccomend off the top of my head are:

Anything by Patricia Green (should be able to find this around $20)
Clos Pegase (probably gonna be in the $30-40 price range).

I probably could give you a few more reccomends, but I'd have to check tasting notes at home (I'm guessing I have notes on a few from $15-20; I know there are a couple I've liked). Send me a smoke if you'd like those later.

thanks for the leads, I'll pop for a bottle one of these days....it's the one grape I'm not familiar with mostly for the $$ reason you mentioned...I always remember some wine show I saw - had Alan Alda going around to wineries and discussing the finer points of wine making etc..- and he asked a wine maker what his favorite grape was and the guy said without hesistating "pinot noir"...i've been curious ever since...

My favorite wine is the one the Colts do to the League Office anytime that something doesn't go their way. The D was to rough with our receivers, an injury should count as a timeout, the field wasn't in perfect shape. Whaaaaaaa, Whaaaaaa.

But I digress.

I'm not a huge wine drinker, but I do like having it when I am with friends durring the holidays, or a nice dinner, or something along those lines. I perfer red over white and usually go with a nice Cab.

But the wine that really goes along way is "Four Buck Chuck" If we are having a get together with my knucklehead friends we'll go and graba case of it.
