Matt Cassel has never been a starter for even a good team, and the equivocation of him with a ten year starter creates a connotation that he's a far better QB than he actually is.

That said, his 2010 TD total was fluff, overwhelmingly padded by short PA throws at the 1 when Charles and Jones did all the work to move the offense. Therefore, you can't equate TD passes with performance. A 60 yard laser that ends up with the receiver tackled at the one is a far harder throw than a PA flare, but doesn't show in the books as equivalent. Completion percentage weighed against YPA is a better indicator, and even it is rife with flaws.

I'll concede that it's far from a perfect metric, but Mauk's stats are hardly inflated by Tackle-eligible type tosses. The guy stretches the field as much as anyone you'll find. The Stephen McGee comparison was as stupid as you'd expect given the poster who made it. Mauk will throw more TDs in his worst full season as a starter than McGee did is his career. Hell, Mauk has thrown 12 TD passes in three games. That equals McGee's best season total.

What's more is their completion percentages are similar, but Mauk averages a full yard and a half per attempt than McGee did for his career.

I wasn't attempting to support the McGee comp at all. However, I don't find TD passes as all that meaningful of a metric compared to others out there, which is why I raised Cassel as a counterargument.

I understand, and we seem to basically agree. I'll add that IMO, TD passes are more meaningful at the college level than in the NFL.
