If the Chiefs go 8-8 or better 49ers get a 2nd round pick.
A third- or second-rounder from Kansas City, the remnant of the Alex Smith deal. Now it can be told: The second draft choice San Francisco will receive from the Smith deal will be K.C.'s second-rounder in 2014 if the Chiefs go 8-8 or better this season. It will be a third-rounder in 2014 if Kansas City is under .500 this season.
So: San Francisco will probably have first-, second- and four third-rounders next year. But if the Chiefs surprise, it'll more likely be a one, two twos and three threes. As we've seen, GM Trent Baalke is dangerous with extra picks in his hands. If Colin Kaepernick is very good, the Niners should be annual contenders for years with the picks laid out that way. I can't let that skate. Alex is very intelligent and makes great on-field decisions. There is no way he has "mediocre football intellect". He is not Peyton Manning, but a key strength of Smith's is his football intellect.

I have a dream. I have a dream that someday the Royals will quit being a feeder system for big market franchises and the Chiefs will quit being fall back plans for every QB that's wasn't good enough to play for a contender. Oh I have a dream!

Matt Barkley would have been better with our second round pick and save our picks for next year and again draft a quarterback.
We should take back to back quarterback years at top of the drafts for competition and create trade value for future picks. Neglecting the quarterback in the draft for 30 years wouldn't hurt one damn bit to do that.

QFT What happened in the 2011 Saints Divisional game? Alex had his back against the wall, do or die with nothing to lose. He quit thinking and played flawlessly. He is over-analytical and risk averse. If you could program him with Aaron Rodgers' appetite for risk -- take the appropriate risk at the appropriate time -- he would be a top 10 QB, about as effective as Eli Manning. He was born over-analytical. It is not coach-able. Reid had better understand this perfectly. |

It won't matter. Most here have never watched the guy. They sure as hell didn't watch him for the last 3 seasons.

I said "intellect". You can be savvy and know how to identify a great stock market trade but still lack the balls to commit your money to it.
The intellect is not the problem. He studies. He understands the playbook inside and out. He assists in the game planning. He understands his opponent's defenses. He reads pre-snap defenses exceedingly well. Alex's audible's was one reason Gore was so effective rushing. He can't take complete advantage of that intellect because as you said, he makes safe decisions. He is risk averse and isn't willing to take a gamble when the game is on the line and calls for taking a gamble. He plays it safe to the last whistle. There are a few exceptions to this and the Saints game is THE exception tha proves the rule. You are dead right. He plays it safe. No risk, no reward. |

Whatever Alex Smith has been doing, it's been working.
