Part of the reason the original trilogy worked so well is they cast relative unknowns in the lead roles.
Casting big names seems like a mistake. I don't think I can watch a Star Wars film with Zac Efron without thinking "what the **** is Zac Efron doing?" Zac Efron is Zac Efron in every film he's ever made. He doesn't become a character. And that would suck in Star Wars.

What made it work was a great script, amazing special effects (the likes of that no one had ever seen up until that point), the "Force", the score, and the fact that it was just plain FUN. The celebrity of the actors was a non-factor. |

IIRC he was the frontrunner to be Batman (1989) before Burton suggested Keaton.

I didn't read the whole thread and I don't have time - if this has been covered - I apologize. I can't give this place the attention it deserves. That's GoChiefs job w/ his 200 thousand posts.

Incorrect.
Lucas specifically state he wanted to cast unknowns in the lead roles so audiences wouldn't be distracted by star power. He insisted on it, despite the complaints of the studio.

Yeah, no. The original trilogy would have been a success even if stars had been cast.
