The 49ers have expressed to others that a deal for QB Alex Smith is effectively complete. Can't be finalized til league year begins 3/12

Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora

so it's not official, both clubs view it at as it's effectively done. I do not know the other team. KC and JAX are 2 teams that make sense

It's possible. The 49ers could be trying to drum up a market, at all. Lets not forget every team had the opportunity to sign him for free a year ago and hardly anyone bit.
Exactly what I was thinking. IIRC earlier this past week or the week prior there were reports from Chris Mortenson that there was very little interest anywhere for Alex Smith. Hard to believe things would've changed that quickly

Just in case you guys decide to take him and let Albert go; what are your thoughts on Albert? I'm not saying the Chiefs will let him go or the Eagles will get him, but I'm curious just in case. The Eagles might be looking at an OT to move Herremans inside, or an RG.

All I know about Albert is stuff I've seen when watching the Chiefs play sparingly, and I remember Reid was high on him before the draft because he could play guard or tackle.
Proven and wants to be a Chiefs. Bought and paid for versus an unknown. I always thought draft value is some made up commodity due to the success rate of the draft. If the pick is a starter, that is great no matter the round. I rank position versus odds more than the round.

So he understands a system (life) versus winging it. I do not think that is a bad thing.

Life is about knowledge of how things work even if you do not agree, whether it be smarts or knowing how things work. Many football players have skills, most football players do not realize that fact due the way they are treated from most due to their football skills. IMO

Fellas, let's give it up. I want Geno just as much as the next guy, but if this trade is true our dream of Geno is over. No chance in hell we trade a third round pick for a qb and still take a qb with the first overall pick. I think Andy Reid sees someone he likes out of next year's draft class.

Glad to see he has eyes. Because Bridgewater is going to be hot hot hot.

This is bullshit being spread by the Niners and or Alex's agent. A week ago nobody wanted him but now all of a sudden a "mystery" team has a trade all worked out. Bull f'n shit.

Niners fans come on our site to try and pimp Smith because they want a draft choice. I think we need to go to their site and write a long piece about how they need Matt Cassel, that he really isn't that bad, is an effective replacement for Smith, and they should give up a draft choice for him.

The only trade that would make any sense to me is Smith for Cassel. I wouldn't give a 7th rounder for him. Even then, getting Smith means we won't be playing our rookie QB for a year and we have to suffer through another boring season of disappointment for little purpose.

Yeah, let's wait until next year after we win 7 games and have the 15th pick, and then we have to trade it and two more first round picks to take a chance on another rookie that the media likes better. Yeah, good plan. Meanwhile, JAX gets the first pick next year, cuts Gabbert, and then they refuse to trade down anyway.

It would be a perfect plan for JAX, Buffalo, Oakland, and Arizona -- not for KC.

If true, it had better be a 5th or less. SF has absolutely zero leverage in the situation. It's a player they have to unload, who has drawn shit for interest the last 2 times he hit the market, and they need it to come through a trade so they don't eat his salary cap hit.

The only thing more sickening than KC trotting ASmith out as a starter would be paying a high draft pick to get a guy that would have been found on the garbage heap for a smaller contract.

Yeah, last year I heard about how awesome the 2012 crop would be.

This team had its chance. They could have tanked for Andrew Luck. If they weren't willing to do it for that kind of prospect, they never will. Which means we're supposed to sit back and wait for the magical moment when a "can't miss" QB prospect lines up with this franchise's once in history bottom of the NFL finish?

It's also kind of odd that Saturday we supposedly were inquiring about Foles...then we turn around and essentially finalize a trade proposal for Alex smith...? Seems a bit quick to make such a transition...

Maybe it is the niners stirring the pot hoping for more potential suitors....maybe it's The chiefs trying to scare the Eagles into putting Foles up for trade as the chiefs may be the only team interested in trading for him...
