Beltran gets brought up because the pickings in the OF are extremely slim, especially if you're looking for power. That and his previous KC connection AND short-term contract outlook. Most of the available guys would be liveable in LF, but not so much in RF.
I wouldn't flip at a Lough/Maxwell approach as long as KC upgrades significantly at 2B. Sitting pat with Bonifacio, Lough and Maxwell would pin too much on internal improvement, which is dangerous. Trade market likely will end up being the key. Michael Cuddyer, Howie Kendrick both make sense for KC (Cuddyer's ability to play RF AND 3B would be pretty nice.) There's been non mention or movement on Cuddyer since the ASB, so I'm not sure if he makes it to the winter market, but he would be a good target. Lineup vs. RHP 7 -Gordon 4 -Bonifacio 3- Hosmer DH Butler 9 - Cuddyer 2- Perez 5- Moustakas 8- Cain/Dyson 6- Escobar Lineup vs. LHP 7- Gordon 4- Bonifacio 3- Hosmer DH-Butler 5 - Cuddyer 2 - Perez 9 - Maxwell 8 - Cain 6- Escobar

Corey Hart?
We should have the money for Pence or Choo along with another SP.

I wouldn't get that excited about Cuddyer, he will be 35 and leaving Coors field.

YEs, the Royals are getting more TV money and have a lot of money coming off the books, but they also will have a ton of players getting raises (Gordon, Butler, Shields, Hosmer, Escobar, Perez, Holland, Crow, Collins, Moustakas, Guthrie). It's not just $25 million (TV) + $20 million (expiring contracts) to spend. More like $30 total.

We may as well look at extending Hos this year, imo. His arbitration won't be cheap.

I've thought this over a lot in the last few weeks, and if we have to choose between Shields or Santana, then I hope we resign Shields over this offseason.
If we could lock up Shields and land a Pence/Choo/Beltran with a Infante/Kendrick/Uribe, I'd feel pretty good about our chances to be contenders in 2015 and beyond (with some luck, we could make noise in 2014 as well). |

One more name at 2B: Cuban emigre Alexander Guerrero.
Boras client. Was a lock to the Dodgers, but they have backed away and he is now open to all teams. No idea if KC is in on him, but he supposedly is a good defender at 2B with 20-HR pop and good speed. Shamelessly lifted from Royals scout site. I wouldn't expect KC to sign either Pence or Choo, though I'd like the move. You're talking 5-6 years and probably $100 million altogether. Not sure if that's realistic.

A good team can afford a no-hit all-glove SS, but we'd have to fix everything else. 2B needs to be at least OK, 3B needs to improve, and we need a great hitter in RF. Butler's obviously going nowhere, and will stay in DH whether we like it or not.

Hoch - $4.5 million (likely tendered, given a raise, possibly traded) Getz - $1 million (gone) Francoeur - $7.5 million Tejada - $1 million (gone) Santana - $12 million (need to spend a similar amount on a replacement in FA to truly contend) Puts it right at $30 million, but about half of that needs to be allocated for a No. 2 pitcher and various spare parts (spare vet swing guy). Just don't want people to look at the numbers and think KC has $50 million to spend. Not the case, and folks would be disappointed.
