HBO greenlights A Game of Thrones pilot! (spoilers)

EDIT: Changed the original header to mark this as the thread where spoilers are allowed (but not necessarily recommended...). Created a new, spoiler-free thread for Ice and Fire virgins...

This is awesome...

Huge, Huge News

Nov. 11th, 2008 at 10:29 PM

HBO has given the production order.

They will be filming the pilot episode of A GAME OF THRONES.

It's just the pilot so far. They'll need to see that before they decide whether to proceed with a full season's episodes. So let's all hope the pilot will kick serious ass.

It should. David Benioff and Dan Weiss did a terrific job with the script. And yes, all of you can relax, it's very faithful. Dan and David will be the executive producers for the pilot and (we hope) the eventual series.

More details when I have 'em. The news is very fresh. HBO just issued their own press release, which should be up on their website soon, if it's not there already.

Winter is coming to HBO. Hot damn.

My only disappointment with the last episode was that the killing of the 'zombie' was so curt. It was bad ass in the book with severed limbs and appendages down to the last finger and jawbone continuing in their quest for flesh.

Just finished Game of Thrones...one of the best books I have read in a long time. Starting the second one today. I have not been keeping up with the HBO series though, I have been working too much. The wife and kids are out of town this week though, and I finally have a day off on Weds....time for a large pizza, some cold beer, and a Game of Thrones marathon!

Well, unlike the TV show (which I think has done a good job at portraying him as conflicted at times), Jaime isn't a point-of-view character in anything you've read so far. So you're getting a picture painted by other people. When you start to see into his mind in the later books, he's still mostly an arrogant dick (as I recall, it's been a couple of years) but he becomes a lot more human at that point. And then a lot of things happen to him. You'll see when you read.

I think most of the Lannister hate is driven by my immense affection for the principles and honor embodied in Eddard Stark, and what came of all that.

I hate when message trumps truth, particularly when the consequences are so deadly. For a real world analogy, imagine that there was a stalwart person of immaculate character who knew for a metaphysical fact, with evidence, that the Bush administration knowingly lied about WMD, who died in ignominy as traitor who revealed vital state secrets to known enemies.

And the guy is a serial sister****er. And not just for procreation, leisurely, decadent and 'romantic.' Gah!!!!!

I mean, I might be accused of being 'binary' but in my world 'sister****er' is pretty much the final word, 'serial sister****er,' for romance and pleasure is the final word with an exclamation point.

Kicking a child to his probable, but unrealized, death to preserve his sister****ing cacoon, not a real plus either.

Yep, I hope when the series is said and done Jaime Lannister dies a horrible death, just for what he did to Bran.

And take all this information, with my fond FOND FOND recollection of Lina Heady and her epic pink end of Dixon Ticonderogas on her chestal area in '300' in stride.

The incest doesn't bother me as much as it does you because in the setting of the story (and in much of the real world at that time), that's just what royal families do. That would have ultimately been the end of the Viserys/Daenerys story if he hadn't been "crowned" by Drogo; he would have been king, she would have been queen and born him heirs.

Looked at from the standpoint of modern sensibilities it's disgusting, of course.

Trying to kill Bran is another story of course. But the thing with Jaime's character is that he changes and in some ways is humbled (and in many ways not). And I probably shouldn't say any more than that. You really have to read it to understand.

That's one of the strength's of Martin's storytelling; the characters who survive are not static. People in book 4 aren't necessarily who they were (or who you think they were) in book 1.

1. Yeah, I'm sure Drogo [had he been scratched on the chest], would surrender his 'moon of my life'to Edgar Winters asthmatic and petulant, little brother.

2. The fornicating for lineage purposes is one thing, languorous afternoons in Winterfell's rafters is another.

That may be the case, but there's a reason Viserys had a line on the show to Dany's whore companion that was basically "I'm not paying you to teach her to please Drogo".

Exactly. Whether or not Viserys could have pulled her away from Drogo, that was certainly his intention. In Viserys' perfect world, he would be king of Westeros and the all the seven kingdoms, and Danny would be his queen and give him a whole heap of tow-headed brats; preferably boys.

He only wed Danny to Drogo for the purposes of an army. His intentions were to rid himself and Danny of Drogo once they helped him capture the Iron Throne.

And... as far as Jaime Lannister goes (no real spoilers, but I'll code it for those who don't want to know anything at all or have their opinions colored by commentary)...

Spoiler!

The thing about throwing Bran out the window is that he really did do it for love, he wasn't lying even though he sounded flippant when he said it on the show. His love for Cersei has already caused him a lot of trouble, and the story is just getting started. As the story goes on, you start to learn more about Jaime and his history, and then lots happens to him. No spoilers, it's a great read and his story is fascinating to watch unfold. Can't wait for book 5 in a month!
