Greene was a former #1 pick who had numerous opportunities to be the starting SS and hit well in the minors but then couldn't do shit in the majors.

This isn't like Pete Kozma. He was even a better hitter than the great Xavier Scruggs in the minors.

I know, which is why he was a AAAA guy--too good for AAA, not good enough for the Show.

I would say either Musial or Ken Boyer.

No, but good guesses. Musial never struck out more than 50 times in any season and only struck out more than 40 times twice!

Didn't even look at the K's, but the BA looked too low to be Stan. I know it's not Torre's MVP season, because he had an ugodly BA.

Eh, Greene didn't hit well in the minors until he was well past age-appropriate for his level. He was 25/26 years old when he was beating up AAA pitching. Even then, he was showing strike zone issues that became pretty apparent when he arrived in the majors.

Greene was the absolute definition of a AAAA player. He was a former #1 pick, but he was a bad #1 pick, just as many were during that period. He was good enough to beat on guys that were far less experienced than he was but when he was put against major leaguers, he was simply overmatched. That's exactly what a AAAA player is.

Yes, I don't know why that surprised me somewhat, I was thinking about how K's are viewed now versus in the past and I remembered the knock against Lankford for striking out too much. I had forgotten he had a stellar OBP which coupled with his power numbers made his K's less of a downside. He was under appreciated while he was here IMO.

Poor Ray.

The ugly end to his time in STL and the fact that his best years were during the worst of the 'end of the brewery era' years really disguised how great a player he was for St. Louis over a 6-8 year period.

His name is usually said with the kind of disgust reserved for Ron Gant and that's just wildly unfair, IMO. The guy was a hell of a player on a lot of bad teams who eventually lost the fight to time.

Injuries and lousy supporting casts covered the fact that a healthy Ray Lankford was a 4-5 WAR player from about 24 yrs old to about 32 years old. That's a damn good career.

Yes, comparing Ron Gant to Ray Lankford is a bit like trying to compare Jose Canseco to Griffey Jr. Ray was a hellluva defensive CF.

A guy that might have been a step slower than Adrian Gonzalez hitting .363 with 230 hits is pretty amazing.

Right, but when you ask people about Lankford's defense, the first thing they're likely to talk about is his time in LF when his arm was completely shot and his legs had left him. They'll probably mention the throw that he put 8 rows deep into the 3b stands.

Really, the dude was a gold glove caliber CFer for about 5-6 years.

But he has the tough job of being the guy that replaced Willie McGee and was (realistically) replaced by Jim Edmonds. Sure, it was Drew that knocked him off CF, but only for a season before Edmonds took the position by the throat.

When your predecessor and your successor were fringe HOF players who were beloved by the fanbase, you're going to get overlooked.

But seriously, how spoiled was this team for about 25 years there? From McGee to Lankford to Edmonds in CF. Man, that's an incredible run.

Yeah, the end is what we tend to remember. Thats why I was glad to see Freese get traded. I'd seen enough .250 hitting with little power.

Freese winning us arguably, the best WS game ever. The home town boy grows up a Cardinals fan to win a WS for his home town.

No one that posts in here thought we would do anything in the playoffs that year. We somehow, someway actually got back to the WS. We were a single strike from going out and Freese by himself brought home our 11th WS championship. I want to remember that magical 2011 series and Freese as a moment frozen in time.
