Planet Doctors, I have a question.....

My wife and I are about to have our 4th baby - all by c-section. After our first baby, our then current doctor told us that my wife should not have more than 3 c-sections. After our 2nd was born, our new doctor told us that he "had a woman that had 7 c-sections" so we thought we were alright.

Now, my wife has been doing some research online and found that there can be some severe problems both for her and for the baby if we have more than 3-4 c-sections.

While we are still pretty young, we have no immediate plans to have anymore kids, but we didn't necessarily want to rule it out. But, if there is cause for concern for either her life or for the babies life, we are considering having her tubes tied once we have the 4th baby.

Can anyone out there give me - us - some direction. Is there reason to be concerned for either her or the baby? Should we seriously consider having her tubes tied? Any information is helpful.

Thanks in advance.

I've never heard of that being dangerous (and my wife used to managa a NICU where almost all of the births are by c-section). I have heard of increased risk of a vaginal birth after having a c-section, but not that. I would trust the words of a doctor rather than "online research" though.

We're about 3 weeks away from having our second baby - both by c-section - and our Dr has never mentioned any risk like that...besides the inherent risks that always go along with any invasive surgery.

I suppose that, since a c-section is basically cutting through abdominal muscles, the scar tissue could accumulate and maybe complicate recovery. I don't know if that's life-threatening though.

We've got a doctor appt tomorrow and we are taking the info that we found with us to at least ask the questions. He has repeatedly told us that we could have basically as many as we want without problems, but just seeing the info gave us a bit of concern.

What does the online research say the added risks are attributed to?

Why did you need a c-section for all 4.

I thought by general rule that if you had a c section that they prefer the rest be as well. But my knowledge here is limited.

Here is part of the info that we printed (short version):

"Q: What are some concerns about effects of cesareans on future babies (when a baby grows in a uterus with a cesarean scar)?

Death: a baby who develops in a uterus with a cesarean scar appears to have an increased risk of dying before (stillbirth) or shortly after birth compared with a baby who develops in an unscarred uterus.

Malformation, Center nervous system injury, Low Birth Weight."

"Q: What are some concerns about effects of cesareans on mothers in future pregnancies and births?

Infertility, Maternal Death, Ectopic Pregnancy, Rupture."

1st one was ER C-Section. 2nd one, we were given the choice to try natural, but doctor said that it may not happen. So we opted for c-section for him and the remaining kids.
