Jared Allen, one bright spot in the Chiefs Defense

Now, Im not sure the exact number of starts Jared Allen had, but Im pretty sure he missed at least the first month of the season playing behind the ineffective Vonnie Holliday, before taking over the starting role.

However, Jared Allen's performance has been outstanding, and I think he was a great find for the Chiefs defense.

Jared Allen finished the regular season with 9 sacks, far and away the team leader in sacks. The next closest number is 4.5.

Here are some numbers of other pass rushers around the league, and how they fared, compared to our sleeper pick in the draft. I think he was picked in the 6th round, but Im not entirely sure.

Jevon Kearse finished his season with 7.5 sacks

NFL sack record holder Michael Strahan finished with 4 sacks.

Vikings 1st round pick Kenechi Udeze finished with 5 sacks

Jets sack specialist John Abraham finished with 9.5 sacks, only half a sack ahead of Jared Allen. Granted, Abraham missed 4 games with a knee sprain, but Allen didnt start the entire season either, missing around 4 games also. So for the same amount of games, Allen is right up there with one of the better pass rushers in the league.

Jason Taylor finished with 9.5 sacks

If Allen had gotten to start the entire season, who knows where his numbers would be. 12 sacks is good enough for number 5 on the NFL Sack leader list this season, held by Simeon Rice. I think in the 4 games he didnt start, he could have had a shot at being up there in the top 5.

We all know one season doesnt make a career, but at least Jared Allen does show some promise, and looks to be a big contributor to the Chiefs defense next season. He is one of a very select few who actually deserves to keep his job this offseason. He has played outstanding for a rookie that was drafted very late, and played for a smaller school. He can only get better.
