So what would YOU do?

All ye who complain about every single move that The Chiefs make. What would YOU do if you were in charge?

I would:
Name Romeo HC. In this way, you take the pressure off to 'WIN NOW'. You're not going to win now. Just try to see what the hell we have to win with next year.
The defense is thin personnel wise, but has made strides in spite of that, considering injuries, complete offensive ineptitude, etc. Continuity on that side of the ball would be best. You don't want to waste the prime years of Hali, DJ, Flowers and Carr on a new system, etc.

I would tell Romeo that after the season he needs to find and groom a younger defensive coach to succeed him as he's 64 and won't be around forever. I want continuity! I want him to find and groom a Mike Tomlin. In fact, who's the Steelers' linebacker coach? Make a guy like that DC.

The rest of 2011 and I'm Romeo: I start Stanzi the rest of the way. You know what Orton is. Yes, you might be able to win a game or two with him, but you know he's not a championship caliber QB. Let's see what Stanzi can do. I run a play-action based passing game paired with a power running attack. Lots of Battle and McClain with some McCluster on sweeps, draws, or screens only. I bench Wiegmann as he's too small to block this way, start Hudson in his place. I play-action pass on first down about 50% of the time. I am unpredictable. We will lose out, but will have SOME idea about the kid.

Offseason:

I sign an up and coming OC and hand him the offense with the following parameters :
-You will run the ball at least 40% of the time, and you will find a way to do it effectively. You'll have Jamaal Charles back, for chrissake.
-You will play a young quarterback with the potential to be a long term starter. You will not play an old guy just because he's 'seasoned'. If it's Stanzi, cool. If it's a round 1/round 2 QB in the 2012 draft? Cool.

I try to keep Zorn in his current role, and as veteran mentor for young OC as well as Stanzi and possible early draft pick QB.

I re-sign Carr. I re-sign Bowe. I sign a depth player at safety that is an upgrade to Mcgraw. I get Berry back.

I cut Cassel. I keep Orton and Stanzi unless Orton wants out. If so I sign a vet back-up. I cut Richardson. I sign the best RT available in FA. I also draft one.

In FA my needs are:
RT
NT
OG/C depending on Hudson's progress at whichever position
Safety depth
vet backup QB

In the draft I do this:
round 1- I draft the best QB available for the offense relative to draft position. Meaning if it's a guy you can get in round 2 then do that (ala Dalton) but probably in round 1. We don't really have a lot of need at skill positions, so reaching in round one is probably fine if it's for the right QB.

round 2-either a) the best NT in the draft or b)best RG/C or RT in the draft. Whoever the best guy is. Take him, plug him in day one and don't worry about it for a decade. I know it's a high pick for those positions. I'm sick of not being able to pass protect or run the ball between the tackles at all. NT is still a problem, and you can't have enough competition there.

round 3 whichever the other is, NT or O-lineman.

round 4-7 best athlete available based on your offensive and defensive systems

This is what I would do.

I didn't make it past the part where you said we wouldn't be in a win now mode with Romeo. I disagree with that. Pioli gets TWO shots at a head coach, and he'd better dmaned know with the next guy, and win sooner rather than later.

If they honestly think Romeo is the guy and can take this team to the next level, then great. If he flames out after a couple of seasons, it makes me them look even more cheap and lazy than they do now.

Hard to argue with your other points, except Weigmann. Cut him now. Great guy, been a great player, but he's just done.

I would get Jeff Fisher. If I couldn't get him, Romeo probably would be my 2nd choice.

Crop just isn't that deep.

Offseason

Priority 1? Move to get RG3.

Everything else is secondary but probably would include... Paying DBowe & Carr. We have the space. Sign a free agent RT, probably draft one also. Cut Weigmann for sure. Draft a RB mid to late.

Long term? Get some more beef on the O-line. A little tired of being one of the smallest O-lines in the league.

That's just off the top of my head.

I hated when Herm was named and I will hate it just as much if Romeo is named the next HC.

I would trade my entire team for the Green Bay Packers. Then I would win. That's what I would do.

Because Romeo and Herm are SO much alike, right?

Romeo has 3 games to show he can be a HC. Then I'll cry about how much I don't want him to be HC.

Well thought out, and I agree with most of it. I truly believe this team is a couple players away, and I don't recall ever being able to say that.

Like you say Wiegmann has been too small for a long time, but now his age won't let him compensate. Cut him and move on.

They should be playing the draft picks anyway, same with Powe at NT.
Is Powe really that bad?

We have seen some surprising play out of Gordon when they move him to NT though.

I think at least twice he has gotten a sack, and I think: Wait, what happened?

Was that really our guy that got some push and a sack? Yep, it is 99 and he is wearing red! Hallia****inglulia, the line got a sack! Holy bejeepers!

But the 1200 pound gorilla setting in the corner is still the QB. They just have to find one, no matter what it takes.
No more recycled QBs no matter how much we fell in love with a few of them.
That is what concerns me about the "must win now" Pioli is now in, they won't want to develop a QB. Clark needs to sell tickets now!

Thus, probably the best case is for Stanzi to be the second coming, or for this team to pick up Manning when Indy has to part with him. I know, he is recycled but win now causes this problem.

at this point ... can't change the past

Talk to Crennel about his plans and as long as his are compatible with mine then i would ...

Promote Crennel and tell him to clean house on the coaching offensive side of the ball. Go out and find the best offensive coordinator possible. Money is not an issue. Mince no words with Crennel that his job is dependent on having a viable offensive coaching staff that can run a NFL level offense and develop players(especially Quarterback)

Tell Crennel that he needs to hire a protege to develop on the defensive side of the ball.

Crennel need to start working on identifying his new coaching targets immediately ... not wait until the end of the season.

Crennel has the rest of the season to evaluate which players are worth keeping so he better play the young guys and find out.

Crennel and New OC have carte blanche when dealing with player personnel. If XXX sucks then cut bait and move on. No excuses.

This coming draft job #1 is to find a QB unless Crennel/New OC are prepared to put their jobs on the line that Stanzi is THE GUY. If not then i do whatever i have to do to get whichever QB they want in the draft. WHATEVER i have to do ... no halfass, no settle.

all good points-

I think you need to start to get some consistency, and I think it starts with a general approach within the staff.

Yes, it took Cowher 15 years to win a bowl-in fact, it took until he got a franchise QB-but that team was always in the hunt, even with often crap QB's. I think if you have a good organizational foundation then you can be in the hunt every year.

I also, however, believe that you MUST have a franchise QB in order to close the deal. We don't have one (at least that we know of) and so we must get one. I think you play Stanzi assuming that you're not going to win these last 3 games, but you need to see if he's got 'it' or not. He'll make mistakes, but if he shows promise then you're in a good spot.

And I think you draft a QB early regardless.

I don't like Fisher any more than anyone else...I like Romeo's pedigree. I know he failed in Cleveland, but so did a certain New England head coach once upon a time.

None of which matters, each individual is different, and each situation is different.

Oh, and I meant that you're not in a 'win now' mode for the last 3 games of the season. These are evaluation games. I mean, you try to win, but you try to win with guys that might help you win in the future.

And you can be the omniscient decision maker: Pioli/head coach/owner.
