The 49ers have expressed to others that a deal for QB Alex Smith is effectively complete. Can't be finalized til league year begins 3/12

Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora

so it's not official, both clubs view it at as it's effectively done. I do not know the other team. KC and JAX are 2 teams that make sense

No, they're really about the same, stat wise.

However, I do think Smith is less likely to fold under pressure. This is why he played well in the play-off game vs the Saints.

Or, maybe it was just because their D sucked.

Either way, he's not winning a SB.

please don't be dumb. I'll bring everything into context for you. Matt cassel had two insanely crappy years the past two years. Alex smith on the other hand had some tough years becasue his team was horrible so no one knew what he actually could do given a good situation. He finally got some talent and he blossomed and since for the past couple of years been playing like a top 5 qb statistically. He's also shown grit and the ability to play clutch in the 4th quarter. Matt cassel hasn't proved squat! He had a okay year with pats, good year with chiefs and then started sputtering to be one of the worst qbs in the league. Timing is everything. Alex could have even worse career stats but if he had a 150 rating past 2 years I would believe that his most recent play is a better barometer for the level he is at. Fact is, Alex has ascended to become a good, dependable, winning qb and cassel for past 2 years has descended to being one of the worst qbs in the league.

Alex Smith had less than 20 TDs the past 2 years. Hes never had a season over 3500 yards. How is that top 5. That's not even top 15.

Try looking at the last 4 years for each QB. I'm not trying to troll or anything here, he has seen marked improvement, whereas Cassel has went downhill.

last year he was on pace to throw 26 tds and throw 3600 yards. Also, yards isn't everything. Look at his passer rating. did cassel even get to within 10 points of alex's 104 ever?

His coaching and talent went up, whereas Cassel's went down. 2010 was Cassel's best coaching in KC. Got them to 10-6 and another first round playoff defeat. I'm sure Andy Reid could do that with Alex Smith for the next 5 years as well. I want more. I want a championship.

3600 yards in a season is absolute shit in today's NFL.

Not only did his coaching talent go up but the coaching carousel stopped. Once the musical chairs stopped he has improved.

Of course. FWIW I only consider Smith as a solid QB to compete for the starting job with Geno. If he is giftwrapped the job then **** it.

225 yards a game. Exactly 1 step above Matt Cassel. 1 step out of about 150.

I don't understand how geno is supposed to be a better chance at winning a championship. I don't mind drafting him but who knows what he'll become. Alex smith right now is just a good qb who knows how to take advantage of talent and make this offense into a well-oiled machine. He's not going to stand out like the rodgers and bradys of this world but as an offensive unit as whole we can be a dangerous unit with the run game and efficient, high percentage passing/scoring.
