My wife's Grandma's recipe she came up with in 1955. From the family cookbook:
42 oz. Cereal, crackers, pretzels, nuts, whatever 1 lb Butter 1/3 C Worcestershire 1 t garlic salt 1 t onion salt 1 t celery salt 3 T chili powder Mix all ingredients Bake in shallow pan 1 hour at 300. Stir twice will baking My wife's modifications are to place on multiple sheet pans and cut the heat to 250. But still stir at least twice. It sometimes takes more than an hour to dry the mixture out thoroughly. Her 42 oz ingredients consist of Corn and Rice Chex, flat pretzels, plain Bugles, Cheez it Groves or Goldfish, Gardetto rye chips, mixed nuts. The only argument I have with her is she likes Goldfish and I prefer the Grooves. And I'm not totally sure about the 42 oz of mix, she has a giant tupperware bowl she fills up and she's made it enough times she knows just the right amount. |

The Mrs. added M&Ms to the batch this year. It's good, but they tend to concentrate in pockets yielding an imbalance in the sweet/salty dynamic.

My dad has been making his own chex mix for years. Loves doing it & every year he looks forward to it around Christmas time. This year, he made 50 lbs. of it and he'll do more after the 1st of the year. My favorite snack of the year. I really need to sit down with him and learn how he makes it.

I'm so broke I haven't made any this year. Hopefully can after my New Year's trip to Hawaii (my dad who lives there may have terminal cancer, this sort of is and isn't a vacation...).
Corn and Rice Chex (prefer not to have wheat) - 7 cups combined Goldfish - 3 cups Pretzel sticks - 1 cup Cashews and almonds - 1 cup I make it extra strong, usually do up two batches of the dry mix (24 cups total) and then mix it with 3x the standard wet mix on the Chex label. And yes, Bugles are also amazing in it. |

My mom used to make me a big 10 of chex mix every year for Christmas. When she died in 2013 my daughter started making it. The 1st year she did not know to add anything to the mix. It was just plain chex. Since then she has stepped up her game and it is awesome. I ate a quart bag this weekend while hunting.
