Lynch fined 75K for helmet to helmet hit...

but the Denver fans said it was 'legal'.

DENVER (AP) -- Broncos safety John Lynch was fined $75,000 by the NFL on Tuesday for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Colts fullback Dallas Clark last weekend.

A league spokesman said Lynch, a 12-year veteran with a reputation as a hard hitter, received the harsh penalty because this was his fourth fine for unnecessary roughness since 2001. The first three all cost him $7,500.

The hit came in the first quarter Sunday.

Clark made a catch and Lynch leveled him just as he turned around. A flag went flying, the ball came loose, it was scooped up by Colts receiver Reggie Wayne, but he then fumbled and Broncos cornerback Kelly Herndon picked it up and ran for a touchdown. Because the hit didn't result in a tackle, officials picked up the flag.

On review, however, officials ruled the pass was incomplete and reinstated the personal foul.

The Broncos were off Tuesday and Lynch was unavailable for comment. After the game, though, the safety said he had no regrets about the hit and insisted it would send a message for the rematch between the teams this Sunday in the first round of the playoffs.

``They're great players,'' Lynch said. ``You've got to find something to slow them down. The only way I think people have found is to be physical with them.''

The hit knocked Clark out of the game with a concussion. He looked dazed on the sideline and had some blood inside his mouth. Approached by a teammate, he could be seen mouthing the words ``I fumbled?'' when told of the result of the play.

Lynch talked at length about the hit Sunday, and even joked a little, relaying a conversation he had with officials: ``I told the ref, `You're killing me. I've got three kids to send to school,''' Lynch said.

The NFL spokesman said the fine had nothing to do with Lynch's comments, only his actions on the field.

This was the second $75,000 fine the NFL has levied in two weeks. The league fined Donovin Darius of the Jaguars for a clothesline hit that temporarily paralyzed Packers receiver Robert Ferguson.

Lynch was the first player to be fined this season -- a $7,500 penalty for a hard hit just below Chiefs receiver Dante Hall's chin in the season opener. Upon receiving that fine, Lynch criticized the league.

``If you make the highlights these days, you're going to get fined,'' he said. ``That's pretty much what it comes down to. It's kind of hypocritical. They put it on their `Greatest Hits,' but they'll fine you for it, too.''

This week, knowing a fine was probably coming, Lynch didn't seem as concerned.

``I think it sparked the team,'' he said. ``Regardless of what happens, people will remember it.''

Are you a twit??? No one is doubting that is was a hard ass hit..

It is the fact that he led with his helmet and used his helmet to make the hit... Do you have a problem understanding that it is illegal and can injury somebody greatly??? This is why they made it illegal.. All you are doing is looking like a ass...

Lynch is a great hitter, but he has twice this season used his helmet when he did not have to.. You come on here and try to defend it when all the evidence shows that he speared with his helmet...

I'm an unapologetic fan.

Lynch is an unapologetic player.

Also it was gonna be a 7,500$ fine if not for priors.

The League didn't think it was actually a hit worth 75K.

I'm not defending nothing. Although i do notice that many posters here are attempting to prosecute him.

Defending Lynch at the Planet is about as possible as a Public Defender taking on Osama Bin Laden.

I'm unapologetic ... thats all.

I have yet to argue the legality of the hit.

My points are:

A. Football is a physical sport and not all hard hits are done with pre-meditated intent to maim or injure ( ie: paralyzation etc ...)

B. If (rookie version) Bartee blew Ashlie Lelie up like that it would be a non-issue here.

That smack is almost as weak as Plummer at the alter, or Plummer in crunch time, or in the playoffs, or when he drops back to pass, or a democrat presidential nominee...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

A: It is physical and he could have knocked the shit out of him without using his helmet.. You think it is a accident, there is a reason he does it so much.. The helmet is like punching somebody with a cast on... He is using his helmet to hit harder, in doing so the chance of injury goes up..

B: We would cheer the hard hit... but we would admit it was cheap.. There would be a few naysayers, but the majority of this board would admit it was a cheap and illegal hit.. hard, but illegal...

I have yet to see a donk fan admit it was a cheap hit... His fines will start out next year at 75k if he does it agian...

And isn't that kind of the point?

Lynch was fined 10x because he is a habitual offender. There is a pattern and history of illegal hits that the NFL is trying to break. The message is clear to anyone with a functional brain stem: Not only should Lynch be apologetic for breaking the rules, Lynch should stop breaking the rules.

Get it?

This is one of the most reeruned things Ive ever read...

Lynch has shown a pattern and is now getting hit with a bigger fine. The league did decide on the higher penalty because of his past behavior.

There's really simple solution to this 'problem' stop hitting people in the helmet with his helmet and he wont get fined. What is it with players once they get on the Broncos they suddenly start leading with their helmets?

We all know that would never happen because Bartee is never within 5 yards of the guy with the ball.

Is there any mystery any more about why Lynch had the neck injury? That's what happens when you lead with your head, and it's been common knowledge for about 40 years.

Lynch should have had a one game suspension for that hit too. He could have avoided that blatant
cheep shot easily but he CHOSE to lead with his helmet at (IOWA alum) Dallas Clark.

Denver is cheep.

Screw that. They ought to give em a bonus for making those kinds of hit. If you want to sacrafice your neck and your own personal health to make a hit that makes millions of tv viewers cringe just watching it, I am all for it. Football is following the trend of the rest of America, and is getting sissified. Don't ever touch the QB, don't touch the WR's, don't fall into the kickers, and lets watch 40 touchdowns every game. The NFL needs to incourage harder hitting. So your player suffers a career ending injury? To bad, that's why my tickets are paying for you to make more in a year then I will make in a life time.

What got you fired up more in last Sundays game, Trent Green picking himself up off the ground checking his mouth for blood after that hit to the chin, or watch TG feed TG yet another TD pass?
