No Compensatory Picks from Chiefs

The NFL announced its list of compensatory picks for the 2012 NFL Draft based on free agent losses last season.

There were 32 picks awarded to 15 teams. Cleveland, the New York Jets and Green Bay each got four extra picks. Pittsburgh picked up three, as did Indianapolis and Oakland. Plus the Raiders received a third-round choice, the only one awarded this year. It’s the 95th pick in the draft and will be the highest slot for Oakland as they traded away their picks in the first, second and third rounds.

The Chiefs were shutout as they did not have enough comings and goings to qualify for an extra choice. Since the compensatory picks became part of the labor agreement, the Chiefs have received 13 extra draft choices.

The formula for deciding compensatory selections is something most NFL teams do not know, but it’s based on free agents signed, lost, the size of the contracts and their contributions during the 2011 season.

The Chiefs lost DL Ron Edwards and Shaun Smith in free agency last year, while signing WR Steve Breaston, RB Le’Ron McClain, DL Amon Gordon and Kelly Gregg and S Sabby Piscitelli.

The Packers got a pair of fourth round selections, plus two more in the seventh round. Minnesota also picked up a pair of fourth round choices. The Steelers three picks are all in the seventh round.

I'm guessing we get shut out again next year even though we lose Orton, Carr and McClain because nobody picked up Richardson and we get Winston. We pretty much balanced each FA loss with a signing.

Winston and Routt were cut. They don't offset anything.

Compensatory picks were based for last year.

I'm guessing next year it won't effect the teams that lost those player, but it will effect the Chiefs for balancing players they lost. The formula balances player lost to FA vs players picked up in FA. The Texans and Raiders won't benefit from the losses since they were cut I'm guessing.

Agree w/ Hemi, Breaston was a good signing, and wills till play and produce this year. McClain, Pussytelli will be gone w/ little lasting contribution. Gregg and Gordon did little at all, and may have stiffled the development of Powe. Even if Powe sucked he wouldn't have been much worse than Gregg or Gordon, so why not plug him in and see if he could develop?

Next year will likely be different, losing Carr, Orton, and McClain, while signing only Quinn that I can think of that qualifies, we might get a 4th/5th round comp pick. Assumes we don't sign any big UFA's from here on out, which I certianly do not expect.

I think despite the fact that Winston and Routt were cut, we still picked them up as a FA and its counts against our spread sheet. You're also forgetting Hillis.

They don't count. Comp picks are based on "qualifying free agents". In order to "qualify", a player can't have been released by his previous team.

Current tally is 3 lost (Carr, Orton, McClain) to 2 gained (Hillis, Quinn).

That was a traded pick. Not a comp pick.

Well, since we let three starters walk including a #1 corner in his prime, we should get some nice compensatory picks next year, way to go Scott!

All Compensatory Picks should at least be 7th rounders.

It's not other teams fault that teams can't manage their roster/cap space well enough to keep players.... or in the Raiders case, use their picks on stupid players.

At this point I'd rather have Routt, Quinn, Winston and (likely) a 3rd round pick than Carr and those other clowns
