Science: Worldwide, 2010 is on track to become the warmest year on record.

Scientists at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies reported recently that the average global temperature was higher over the past 12 months than during any other 12-month period in history. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has released corroborating data, adding that the past four months, including June, have each individually been the hottest on record as well.

Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) reiterated his skepticism of climate change science during an outdoor interview at the Capitol this week, in the midst of the Washington heat wave. "I don't think that anyone disagrees with the fact that we actually are in the middle of a cold period"

The three-month period (August-October) was the coolest on record for three states: Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma. Five other states had top five cool periods: Missouri (2nd), Iowa (3rd) , Arkansas (5th) , Illinois (5th) and South Dakota (5th) . Every climate division in Kansas (nine) and Nebraska (eight) recorded a record cool such period.

I find it pretty funny that when the weather was cold and snowy, and hearings on global warming were canceled due to snow, the same people crowing about the last 12 months were saying "Weather is different than climate...they're unrelated...the earth is in the final throes and trying to cool itself."

Keep in mind that temperature stations are now mainly in urban areas due to sprawl. It's a known fact that cities are generally warmer than rural areas.

Of course once the large hurricanes stopped hitting the coast and the temperatures dropped, the common term used became "climate change" as opposed to "global warming." How inconvenient.
