Jets quarterback Geno Smith was apparently escorted off a Virgin America flight at LAX today by police after what a witness called a "verbal altercation."

The photo you see above was sent to us by a reader who witnessed the incident and says the shot came "moments before" Smith was escorted out of the airport by cops. Our tipster wasn't the only person who saw it:

We're working on getting more details, but it looks like Geno's weekend isn't off to a great start.

Update (7:11 p.m.): Our tipster fills in some details:

We were waiting for our flight at LAX to Vegas and were put on standby on Virgin American just like Geno. We were told to get seat assignment at 2:40. Apparently Geno was not on board with that. My friend walked over to discuss seat assignment and Geno was saying to airline ticket agents, "**** that, this is bullshit." "Why the **** do I have to wait until 2:40." He would not let it go. He continued to curse and be loud for about 5 minutes. Police were called. They talked for a few minutes and then 3 officers escorted him out of the terminal.

Funny you should point to that game, since the Jets only won because of a bullshit call never made before or since, in a case where the league agreed that the Jets had done the same thing earlier in the game and the league had taught the rule differently during the preseason. 17 for 33, 233 yards, 1 TD 1 INT. That's one of the 2 games the Jets got credited for as wins directly because the officials gave them the game on blown calls. Mr. 8-8 really was no better than 6-10, and his statistical season was basically the same as Sanchez' rookie year.

Smith as a rookie: 66.5 QB rating with 12 TDs and 21 INTs

Great call there, though, bringing up a gifted win at home against a Patriots team that was absolutely devasted by injury at the time.

Shit, if Geno didn't go full reerun at the end of their first matchup, he would have swept you guys in his rookie year. He only lost by 3 to you guys in fox borough.

It's a shame that if he didnt throw those picks at the very end, he would have taken a shit team to the playoffs as a rookie and people call him a bust because he was inconsistent.

I know, he made some TERRIBLE decisions with the ball early on...but he ended the year the way you want to see a rookie end the year.

Winning 3 of his last 4...having the second highest total QBR in the NFL over the last 4 games, including Carolina and Cleveland's defenses...losing the 6 seed in the playoffs to a tie breaker.

But, yeah....he's a bust because he cussed out some stuardess.

I don't know if it's really the hardest position to play in sports. It's way up there but it's certainly debatable. Hockey goalie immediately comes to mind. A baseball catcher is certainly up there too.

The only other thing I'd say is I agree I think Geno showed potential. Obviously QB is more important than OL... but there's no need to drag Fisher into this. Fisher certainly has just as good a shot of being a good LT as Geno does a good QB. In terms of physical talent relative to the position they play, Fisher probably shows more potential than Geno does. Of course reaching potential is an entirely different argument.

I'm just fine with the decision they made. If Alex can keep growing into his role and playing at a high level, this team is gonna be hard to stop.

Alex Smith > Geno Smith

So far, at least...and I like the Reid/Alex combo better than the Ryan/Geno combo...being Mark Sanchez will probably get his job back next year in exchange for banging Rex's wife.

I actually think he showed some promise at the end of the season.
Enough to maybe hold a clipboard one day. Which is what he should have been doing for a cpl years.
As things are though Im pretty sure hes gonna end up getting replaced in NY and probably wont get another shot until someone goes down.
If he can take advantage of his huge talent and capitalize on it, he may have a chance to resurrect his career down the line.
I dont see him making it in NY at all though. The team was too patient with sanchez which will make them kneejerk with Geno.
Its all up stairs for him though thats for sure. He has no physical limitations.
