Jaworski rates Chiefs QB at No. 20 among NFL starters

Jaworski rates Chiefs QB at No. 20 among NFL starters

The Kansas City Star
Former NFL quarterback-turned-broadcaster Ron Jaworski ranks new Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith No. 20 among the NFL's 32 starting quarterbacks.

That's according to Jaworski's ratings on ESPN's MediaZone site, transcribed from his three-minute daily segments dubbed "Jaws' QB Countdown" on SportsCenter and NFL Live.

Smith, of course, was acquired in a trade from San Francisco this offseason, and has yet to throw a pass in Kansas City (aside from OTAs, that is).

Here are some excerpts from Jaworski's evaluation of Smith:

“A year ago, Smith was coming off his best season in the NFL, having led the 49ers to the NFC Championship. This year, he’s the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs. It was a great move by (Chiefs coach) Andy Reid to acquire Smith.

“The defining element of Smith’s play is efficiency. He executes the offense the way it’s designed, and he makes very few mistakes. Last season – for the second year in a row – he was exceptional on first down. In 2012 he led the NFL in first-down passing, with a quarterback rating of 119. Much of it came off play-action, or in the case of the 49ers, hard run-action out of base personnel. There was no better play-action quarterback last season than Smith. He had a quarterback rating of over 132.

“Smith has been outstanding out of multiple tight end personnel over the last couple of seasons. No quarterback has thrown the ball more with three tight ends on the field. You don’t see that very often in today’s NFL.

“This play was beautifully designed with all three tight ends to the same side. First, look at the impact of the run-action on the two linebackers and the safety. This was hard run-action. Then you see that Delanie Walker’s vertical route occupied the corner. That left Vernon Davis matched on a safety, a safety that initially reacted to run. He had no chance on Davis’ wheel route.

“One area Smith improved in 2012 was in the pre-snap phase of the game. He was much better at the line of scrimmage checking and audibling.

“It will be interesting to see what Andy Reid does in Kansas City. Don’t be surprised if he turns Smith loose a little bit and features an up-tempo offense with an emphasis on quick throws. Remember, Alex Smith played for Urban Meyer at Utah.”

Other QB's that Jaworski has analyzed so far:

No. 32 Matt Flynn

No. 31 Jake Locker

No. 30 Kevin Kolb

No. 29 Chad Henne

No. 28 Mark Sanchez

No. 27 Christian Ponder

No. 26 Brandon Weeden

No. 25 Michael Vick

No. 24 Ryan Tannehill

No. 23 Carson Palmer

No. 22 Sam Bradford

No. 21 Josh Freeman

Down 3 with seconds left. Who do you want taking the final shot to push for OT? The guy who has spent his season taking layups, or the guy with a lower ppa, b/c he's been carrying the team and doing what he had to in order to win.
Brilliant analogy. Rep.

On paper, it was a horrible trade for an average game-manager. We shall see.

You are going to look pretty dumb when Alex has a great year. But of course if he completes 70% of his passes you will complain about the 30% he doesn't-lol

We get the best QB we have had since Green and you spend every waking minute bashing him. He has NOT even thrown a pass for us??

As far as a horrible trade- how do you know that? Usually it takes years to find out if a trade pans out or not?

Sweet Pussy Hate just revels in being a miserable prick. It is his CP motif. He admits to taking nothing seriously on a forum.. so he simply wastes his empty life on here with that repetitious and childish shtick.

It shouldn't take years. Alex has everything going for him.

He knows this offense well. The team drafted and signed FA's to fit his style, beefed up the offensive line to protect him, and he's got a top 5 HB to take pressure off of him.

At his best he's a C+ to B- QB and I fully expect those low expectations to be met in year one. There's no real excuse for not meeting them...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

I think hes a B- to B+ qb. He wont have any problem fitting into that category, because everything that he needs on offense, he has. A really good oline, a great running game, tight ends, and one dependable receiver. He will be fine.

It takes years on draft picks not free agent trades.

But we shall see.

Eh......Just because drew brees worked out, doesn't mean that Jim Everett, Aaron Brooks, Kerry Collins, ultimately did. Finding a qb is a crap shoot, and some times can take a few years. But, in this case, it wont. Alex Smith is so used to change, and the systems aren't that different anyways, with a lot of the key players being similar.

Alex will know what he's doing and be fine. Whether the OL and receivers will quickly know what they are doing is the only thing that could keep this year 1 offense from being above average vs below.

That's where alex will help. He understands what the defense is doing, and is literally a coach on the field. You have seen it. All of his checks and audibles at the lines. He knows what he sees, and will put his players in position to succeed......

Things you failed to mention:

1) His great smile
2) His perfectly manicured eyebrows
3) All the great work in the community he will do
4) What a nice guy he is

There will likely be "excuses" flying from both sides. Whatever twists to one's agenda will be made by many. There is never any getting around that.

Me? I'll try and keep it as real as possible. I spend my weeks watching the games over and over, whereas some people just watch once live and then think they know what really happens each play. Ultimately, there will be some that don't care about the truth. But for me, if Alex screws up? I'll have zero trouble in calling him on it... because intellectual dishonesty won't help anything.
