Had John Belushi lived, he would have a career with a trajectory like Will Ferrell. Creative, over saturated, different generations with different opinions, and a bunch of crappy movies with some amazing ones along the way.
But he died. So he's a hero and a geenus and a historic tragedy and all the other nostalgic benefits that follow people like JFK, Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison, James Dean, etc. The one thing I wonder is if JB would have gone the route of Robin Williams, Bill Murray and Jim Carrey (and to an occasional degree Will Ferrell) and done some amazing dramatic work. I can picture it, but we never really saw it. |

I have never thought John Belushi was funny and still don't. I have seen about every episode of SNL that he was on nothing he did every came close to making me laugh.

In retrospect, the skit where an elderly John Belushi dances on the graves of the other cast members was pretty funny, since he was the first to go.

Belushi was surrounded by the best cast SNL ever had. He didn't have to carry the show, but his brilliance was there for everyone to see. To say that some SNL cast member was "the best" because he/she carried the show is ridiculous.

My vote throughout the process went to people whom I thought were a bigger star on the show. Guys like Kevin Nealon and Norm MacDonald made a big name from the show to form a career after, but if you look at their time on the show, they were only in a few sketches as an extra each week or relegated to a skit on the weekend update.
Farley was hilarious but he was never even close to being the biggest star there. I could point to at least 5 of his co-cast members who were more involved in coming up with new skits, and creating memorable recurring characters.

I think he would have gone on to be a great actor. That said, I think his work on SNL was highly overrated.
