I had my first really great benefit package back in 1994 while working at Universal. I was like 29 years old and never used it. Later, as an exec at Paramount, they were even better and I never used them, even after being married. Now, at age 49, we're fortunate to have excellent benefits because we use them constantly with kids, cancer, checkups, meds, etc. |

I guess it depends if you just aren't I to the job, or you hate it. I've worked a couple jobs where I was actually miserable. Couldn't wait to leave them, and I took less money with the next job to have peace of mind. Being miserable at work, and working with miserable people is def the worst.

But let's say, all things being equal, your job as Data Analyst will either pay you $38k at a company you love, or $60k at a company in which you don't like the people, the manager, etc. Regardless of how much you dislike the people at the $60k job, it's in your best interest to suck it up for 12 months, then look for another job paying at least $60k, because that's your current value. But if things aren't equal, such as $60k for an office job you despise versus working as a mechanic, something you love, for $22k less per year, the answer may be less obvious. |

all about your personal situation
If Job A isn't "painful" to work then most people are going with that, money is just too important. Have kids - Job A Have a mortgage - job A Have a wife - Job A Plan to get any of the above soon - Job A If you're single and just want less BS in your life - Job B

$22K is a very significant amount. Every year, mind you.
I'm going to the money every time. I'm currently in a position that pays way good and I love every minute of it. Yay me. If people are depending on you, you go to the money. No question. |

There are obviously a lot of variables but $38,000 a year in this city will get you a house in a hood-ish area. I'm not saying you're going to be hearing gunshots every night or anything but there'll likely be at least a small element of crime nearby.

For me it would depend on what the growth opportunities are.
If 60K was a job that would stay the same for a decade, then hell no, unless I was building a side business or passion/startup outside of work and this job was a 9-to5 that I did;t think about once I left work. at 38K if I was being groomed to be promoted or was the first job that I could use as a springboard o much more important job in the future then you bet. I took a $8000 salary pay cut to enter advertising when I left my first corporate job to become a jr. writer. I was making more than the difference within 2 years, and sipping Cristal from a stripper's navel with Dane McCloud a few years after that. |
