ATT to impose DSL/Uverse cap
http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/13/a...-overage-fees/
150 gigs for landline DSL, 250 for U-Verse. $10 for each additional 50. Thoughts? |

I heard about this a couple yrs ago. Other will be doing this, I'd imagine. If not ATT will be hemorrhaging customers.

good thing I just left them then. I don't know if I come anywhere near those limits or not but this is exactly what I have been fearing. Internet is expensive enough already.

Comcast did this back in October, which is my only other choice in my area.

Get used to it, people. It's the companies' answer to the ever-increasing use of bandwidth. Mobile internet providers have started doing it too; my Virgin Atlantic account is $40/month for unlimited, BUT if you download more than 5GB in a month then they start restricting your access speed.
And, frankly, I guess, I can't think of any fairer way to do it. If you consider bandwidth as a commodity (a consumable one, even), then it's only fair that those who use more of it pay more. If I only use, say, 20GB per month, but the pornfreak down the hall who also streams TV shows all day uses 500GB per month, why should I pay the same money as him and/or have to suffer slowdowns/dropouts in service because he's beating off to the high-def streaming version of "Romancing The Bone"? |

Excellent.
I hope a portion of those monies go to the content providers for all of the illegal downloads. |

The most important thing here is that they had better have real time status information on your account.

hahaha yeah, these money hungry companies are as likely to share money as the movie industry is to not cook their books so that every movie can look like a loss.

There is that...but don't be surprise if technology comes out that eliminates that concern.

They said that they're going to make a "tool" available to everyone that shows their current status prior to charging any overages. Also will send warning messages at certain percentages.
