My Cartilage is partially torn. I have been doing a lot of PT. I can feel that my knee may not be the same again.

I've completely torn one of mine twice.
For me, it wasn't a big deal. It didn't hurt that much, for one thing. I just didn't have stability in it. The surgeries weren't all that bad, either - nor were the rehabs. The first time was a gradual thing - I couldn't point to the time it actually happened. The second time was stupid. I was running the bases in softball, of all things, and I felt it pop. Again, it didn't hurt all that much, comparatively speaking. I tore my rotator cuff, and THAT hurt. There are obviously big differences, though. 1) I am not an elite athlete. I rehabbed for six months, took it easy for another six, and can do the stuff I did before. 2) I had mine replaced, both times, with a cadaver graft. I'm guessing they'd use a graft from an athlete's body - usually, from their patellar tendon. That takes a little longer to rehab, because there are now two injured spots. It's also supposed to come back stronger with your own graft. I really think he should come back close to what he was before. The biggest problem, I think, is what seems to be a greater chance of re-injuring it. But it's not like it was fifteen years ago, when it was largely considered career-ending.

Good question, though. I often wonder about that stuff. If you herniated a disc in your back, were you just crippled and in pain the rest of your life? It seems like that's the only option.

Blew an ACL the summer I was 15 at the Larry Holly basketball camp at William Jewell. Knew something was wrong right away. Audible pop followed by intense pain. Had reconstructive surgery performed by Chris Barnthouse, who was (may still be, don't know) a Chiefs doctor. After months of intense rehab at Baptist Medical Center with some Chiefs practice squad members, which was pretty cool as 15 yr old, I was finally cleared to return to sports in time for track season, which started around late February. I think my surgery was in July, so roughly 7 months before I was good to go.

when did it happen? 5 years ago
how'd you do it? playing basketball did you know what you'd done when it first happened? Unfortunately, yes did you have it repaired? Yes how long til you were "as good as new"? I was 40 when it happened, so, the thought of being "new" again has never occured to me

when did it happen?
late 80's how'd you do it? chasing down a fly ball. running straight forward. did you know what you'd done when it first happened? knew it was ****ed up. it popped and i dropped. did you have it repaired? scoped the next day. doc says therapy for awhile, i'd be good as new. couldn't walk across the yard w/o it buckling on me. went to a specialist in como, and they did the acl replacement. how long til you were "as good as new"? hard to say. imo, i was ready the next year, but ****in coach never let me off the pine after that.

when did it happen?
1991 how'd you do it? Playing indoor soccer did you know what you'd done when it first happened? i was kicking a ball when an opponent kicked the ball the other way. My foot and the ball went one way, my leg and knee went the other way. Knew it immediately. did you have it repaired? Got it repaired a couple of years later. They took part of my patellar tendon to make me a new acl. how long til you were "as good as new"? The repair has held up for 18 years now, but it has never been the same.

Never an ACL but I saw an Achilles tendon tear once playing softball. I was rounding 2nd and the runner in front of me just collapsed. I watched the entire tendon roll up his calf like a window shade. Pretty gross.

Yes.
Did it catching.. Actually, trying to throw somebody out stealing 2nd. Oh, I know it. A pop that I won't ever forget... No, the military wasn't really doing that back then. Their treatment was to remove floating parts, shave it back, and hit the gym and work the living HELL out of the hamstrings... Nice!!! 8-10 months after working the hamstrings like there was not tomorrow, it was never really a problem again... I wish back then the technology they have today!! But I coach wrestling and it still has a tendancy to "pop out" every so often. But it pops right back in, hurts for a day or nine, then it's all good again... It's life!!

Mine got completely obliterated a few years ago when I was playing intramural basketball at K-State. Some guy undercut me from the side and just hit my knee at the perfect point. There was a loud pop, and I went down in tremendous pain. I knew it was bad because I couldn't walk. The training staff at the rec said it was one of the worst ACL tears they had seen.
Unlike elite pro athletes, who can usually have surgery right away, I had to wait for my swelling to go down and some other things to happen. I got hurt in February and didn't have surgery until June or July, I can't remember. I did a hamstring graft to replace my ACL. PT was easy. But, then I had an infection that caused one of the plastic screws in my knee to float up to the surface of my skin and poke through my incision. That was weird. So, I had to have another surgery to clean that mess up. I'm not sure what the timetable was after that, but it was a while before I felt comfortable running full speed and doing things that I did before. I'm still not as fast or explosive as I was before, which kinda sucks, but luckily I've avoided re-injuring it. It's a long process that takes a toll on you mentally and physically, especially if you're an active person. |
