GIG HARBOR, Wash. (AP) - Two pit bull terriers broke into a house through a pet door Tuesday and attacked a woman in her bed, mauling her badly, a Pierce County sheriff's spokesman said.

The woman was able to grab a gun and try to shoot the dogs, then break away from the attack and lock herself in her car, where she called 911, sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said.

The woman, who was not immediately identified, was taken to a hospital in Tacoma, where she was listed in serious condition.

Officers planned to talk to the dogs' owner.

The pit bulls also killed a neighbor's Jack Russell terrier, which entered the house during the attack, Troyer said.

"The thought is that the Jack Russell heard noise in the neighbor's house, came in and was attacked by the dogs," Troyer said.

Firefighters responded first, locking the dogs in the house, treating the woman and calling for an ambulance.

Officers "had to pepper spray and fight the dogs until they were detained. We almost had to shoot them on site," Troyer said.

The dogs were taken to a Humane Society and will probably be destroyed, he said.

It was not immediately known why the dogs entered the house, whether the woman had dogs of her own or what set off the attack.

I figured any friend of his would have a clue being raised in a similar enviroment. People who cap on the breed simply have had zero exposure to it.

Exposure: I should have said, exposure would mean having raised and worked with the breed, not seeing some ass hat trying to act cool with his dog on the corner of your street.

The owner in this case should be held fully liable irregardless of breed.

It seems breed specific legislation is slowing down to some level nationally at this point thank god.

We have already went down this road many times. Do we actually know it's even a pit? No. They reported the lady killed in SF was a pit and it was a 120 pound presa canario. Facts are pits are not even at the top of the bite list when it comes to humans and they call all kinds of dogs pits these days. I posted all the stats before many times and I am not going to repost them every time somebody start this all over again.

What you posted equates to asking someone what they think of planes after they were in an accident. Just ****ing stupid like just about everything else you post.

I would like to see a list of mauling over a bite list. Many dogs will bite, but if it doesn't continue the attack it isn't such a horrible thing.

Same is true for a Pit Bull.

I have posted all the stats before and you've seen them. You just refuse to acknowlege them and would rather choose the fear to understanding. That's Ok though it's your choice.

Funny how we can keep our weekly Pit Bull post rate up usually without a hitch.

Why people choose to correct others misspellings and speech when they know exactly what point and understand everything they say to a tee is beyond me.

You have no idea what owners of this breed have to go through. I am tired of people wanting to kill my dog when he has done nothing but be a great pet. I have many, many friends with the breed too. Love their dogs as well and take care of them from time to time. They are awesome animals. None of their kids have ever been biten.

I am fully for going after owners that are irresponsible, that is the real answer.

For the record the new trend for the humaniacs is wanting all dogs now to get a mandatory newly developed shot that will take all aggresion out of your dog. Make it completely worthless basically.
