Laptop Purchase Advice

The daughter unit is in college and wants a laptop. Anybody have any suggestions on what would be a good machine with a reasonable price?

just check the Sunday ad's, looks like CompUsa has a 6 hr sale and Circuit city/Best Buy seem to have decent laptops ..

I have used them all, Dell,Sony,HP,Compaq etc... All are pretty much the same in parts (Pentium 4,Celeron etc)... The only thing different is the service if something goes wrong, Dell is great, can't speak for the others... Look at around $500.00 for a good (middle of the road) laptop for your daughter....

Up here in Maryland, 1200-1700 is a pretty mid-level laptop at a brick and mortar store.

Dell

Stay away from hp/compaq. A Mac would also be a good choice for a young college student.

$500.00 now with rebates etc.. I saw 2-3 this week in the paper.. Also, you might go the dell.com and check the discountiued models, etc... They are about that price, maybe $600.00 tops... You need probably 1.5-2.0 ghz laptop with cd burner for $500.00.. For $1200-$1700.00, you must be getting the 17" widescreen, dvd burner, etc.. Stuff not needed for a college student... Also, gateway laptops arent bad either.. Check ebay is a third option...

I bought the wife aGateway for 799 -50 instant and 150 mail in Rebate = 600.00

40 gig Pentium IIII cdburner dvd/rom usb 2.0 firewire
Although I ahd to add my own wireless card. Anyway,
She loves it, mainly used for internet.

I love Gateway and have never had any problems with them. 6months no payment and no interest, right now.
