Hasty exploded, rudely and forcefully telling Cunningham in a short tirade that Chiefs players were disgusted with Cunningham's "I" speeches, "I" attitude and finger-pointing.

"I've always been brought up that the game is about team," Hasty told me privately, moments after he had cleaned out his Chiefs locker Tuesday for what he believes is the final time. "It's not about individuals.

"I felt like it needed to be said," said Hasty, a two-time Pro Bowl defensive back. "... There was a lot of finger-pointing going on all season. You have to take responsibility on yourself. Somebody had to say something."

"All season, I heard a lot of `I built this' and `I built that,' " Anders said of Cunningham. "I guess that's what he felt he needed to do to try to make a point that we should respect what he's done."

"The atmosphere was real foul from the beginning. No one would talk to me. I felt like Carl or Gunther owed it to me to at least come up to me and talk to me about it. Hey, they could've told me this is the direction they were going. But no one said anything. All I wanted was to be respected. I've given respect the whole time I've been here. I thought the respect got stripped away from me."

"Gunther used the `I' word more than most coaches do," Grunhard said. "He also tried to appease too many guys who weren't playing well. He thought he had to kiss (fanny) to get some guys to play hard."

At least the players know enough to rip someone publicly after the season is over and not during the season. If the players acted like Gun during the season we may be talking about a top 5 draft pick.

If the head coach is not retaining the respect he has earned from his players . . . they're not going to want to play. I don't know details, but it seems Marty resigned 'cause he felt he was losing control.
Gun may have never had it,in an emotional sense.

If he(Gun) doesn't leave, we're gonna see a lot more articles like this.

I think Gun has a good head for football, but he obviously doesn't have the management or leadership skills of a HC.

I always thought Gun was in over his head as HC. We should have brought someone else in for the job (like CAPERS) and left Gun at DC. Too late to go back now. He needs to move on. Personally I like him, and wish this hadn't happened, but he's lost the respect and control of the team.

Don't go away mad, Gun, just go away...

It sounds like the players are starting to abandon ship before the boat springs a leak, So to speak. This is NOT good. Gunther is gone! He has to be if it's come to this. Carl admit your mistake and start looking A.S.A.P. for a new coaching staff. Preferably tomorrow.

The only reasonable approach at this point would seem to be to cut the entire coaching staff free. Bob Dole feels that Carl won't see it that way, but instead, see "loose cannons" that are "bitter because they know they won't be Chiefs next year" and will retain Gun just to "show who's in charge of this organization."

Hasty and Grunny making the comments should be enough to overcome even Carl's pig-headedness, but has anything else played out like a reasonable individual would expect the past few years?

If nothing else, we might actually get to read about the Chiefs during the off-season... Maybe NBC will turn it into a daytime soap.

It would really be interesting to know what Lamar's true thoughts are on the topic!!

Is the tag line appropriate for the Chiefs situation???

I think that Hasty, Kimble and Grunny should be kept just for being men enough to call out the truth, rather than walking the company line.

If Goonther is around next year, Carl should be beaten...kinda like the scene in Airplane...all of the Chiefs fans can line up with their baseball bats, brass knuckles, boxing gloves, et al, and take turns pounding some sense into him.

Anders has every right in the world to be bitter, there is no real good excuse for the way he was treated.

With our luck we will cut Hasty for cap reasons and he will play for Oakland or Denver. The article read to me that Hasty had a tirade type arguement with Gunther, but feels they respect each other enough to have that sort of conversation and that he still respects Gun. Remember it was only a couple of weeks ago that Hasty came up to Gunther and told it that it was good to have him back.

As it sounds for Grunhard to not retire would take a lot moves by the Chiefs.

It will be an interesting offseason, but if we lose Hasty I have no doubt that we will suck next year, no matter what happens on the offensive side of the ball.

Here are some interesting quotes from another article...

``I want to give my vote of confidence to Gunther. He did well with what he was dealt,'' said center and team captain Tim Grunhard. ``I always find it funny that instead of firing the player, you fire the coach. Then that player hangs around and infects another team.''
``There are some people who are getting paid a lot of money and they're not performing to that level,'' Grunhard said. ``They've all had their chances. I think it's time to say goodbye and maybe use the salary cap money somewhere else.''

``We've got to get Elvis Grbac signed,'' said Grunhard. ``Everybody thinks that's a gimme but it's not a gimme. I know Elvis real well.''

``He's looking forward to next year,'' quarterback Elvis Grbac said after meeting with Cunningham. ``I think in his mind he's getting prepared for next year.''

``The evaluation at the end of the year is an important thing,'' Cunningham said. ``I want to make sure the things I did were right. I know not all of them were. Then I've got to look at the staff and get together with Carl and talk about them.''

I've talked before about Goonther's propensity to take credit for the positives and pass blame for negatives as one of the primary reasons that he should be fired. He creates an atmosphere of distrust and bitterness. Not a quaility that you find in men with good leadership skills.
This article seems to lend credence to my position.
