Owners of Toyota Cars in Rebellion Over Accidents Caused by Sudden acceleration.

Owners of Toyota Cars in Rebellion Over Series of Accidents Caused by Sudden Acceleration

Anyone else been following this story? They had a pretty graphic show on nightline about it last night.

http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/Runawa...ory?id=8980479

Refusing to accept the explanation of Toyota and the federal government, hundreds of Toyota owners are in rebellion after a series of accidents caused by what they call "runaway cars."

Share
Department of Transportation: underlying defect causes accelerators to stick.

More PhotosSafety analysts found an estimated 2000 cases in which owners of Toyota cars including Camry, Prius and Lexus, reported that their cars surged without warning up to speeds of 100 miles per hour.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE OF THE RUNAWAY TOYOTAS STORY.

Toyota says the incidents are caused by floor mats becoming stuck under gas pedals, but owners say that's not what happened to them.

Watch the full report tonight on 'World News with Charles Gibson' and 'Nightline'.

"I'm absolutely certain that in my situation, it was not the floor mats," Elizabeth James told ABC News. She was driving her Toyota Prius outside Denver, CO when she says it suddenly shot up to 90 miles an hour, even though her foot was on the brake and not the gas pedal.

"I kept going faster and faster," James said. "And all of a sudden… my foot was pressing on the brake super, super hard and I wasn't slowing down."

James and some other Toyota owners suspect the accidents have been caused by some kind of glitch in the electronic computer system used in Toyotas that controls the throttle.

At least they are being proactive.

US automakers would argue about it for years then still blame the consumer.
So you are taking thier press releases as gospel? sorry, but I'm a cynic when it comes to decisions that will cost corporations billions to make right.

Sorry for the double post, but please tell me this is sarcasm.

Notice how far back they’re reaching with the recall? They’ve known about this for years, have to know there are deaths related to accidents from the affected models, and tried blaming the consumer for not being bright enough to keep the floor mat off the accelerator.

Disparage US automakers all you want, but Toyota is the automaker with the reputation for dragging it's feet on recalls.

Exactly, this has been going on for a few years. There have been over 40 deaths, with the most recent ones happening the day after Christmas and the floormats were in the trunk.

This was not going to go away, and was going to continue to escalate.

I am convinced, it is an electronics hardware issue. If it was a simple re-flash of the computer, they would have already done that.

Imagine if they said, "yeah, we knew people were dying driving our cars but didn't want to lose the money it would take to do the right thing". Is that what you would have expcted them to do?

IMO they have admitted that there was a problem and they knew about it by trying to fix it/investigate it over the past year or so. To say they didn't know people were dying/getting injured? Well, all they would have had to do is ask someone sitting next to them. Because everyone else in the world knows it.

By attempting to point fingers somehow to US auto makers with the statement "this is what so and so would do" shows you have the same mentality. That mentality is killing people. Who gives a rats ass what someone else would do. Toyota has finally stepped up after several incidents and said they either have to start facing the rath of law suits and the repercussions that it would cause in sales, or do something to save thierselves. In other words, now that they stand to lose thier bottom line, they are doing something. Losing lives meant nothing. It's big business. It has nothing to do with USA vs. Toyota.

Jesus. I mean, I'm not trying to be offensive here, but I am struggling with your statement. Maybe Im reading something into it. Sorry if I am.

Its so frustrating watching everyone piss on each other over thier car preferences. Listen people, everyone dont have the same haircut, everyone dont like fat butts, everyone dont like Toyotas. Get over it.

The bottom line is Toyota is in big trouble here, and it's about time. They deserve it for thier business practices. For those defending them, you have your work cut out for you.

For the record though, when Ford Explorer had trouble with those Firestone tires coming apart I was still buying Fords. It didnt really change anything. It can happen to any automaker. I expect the loyal Toyota drivers will stilll buy Toyotas. As they should, if thats what they like driving.

Yea i think your reading into it. I should have been more clear.

By stepping up and taking the financial hit they are doing the right thing here. At least they are attempting to nip this in the butt before it becomes a bigger problem.

Bravo to them.

So......if Toyota's are causing people to die, we should be able to get a pretty good discount on a new one, right?

Great. Good luck with YOUR choice. I would buy another Toyota. I have a an 01 Camry that has 153,000 miles on it and drives better than any new Ford. I know this because I was the Business Manager at a Ford dealership up until about 10 months ago. I've driven every model that Ford currently makes. And Ford makes the best domestic car.
No need to respond about how wrong I am. It's my choice of vehicle and you will not change my mind. I have been in car sales for many years and sold for most every brand and Toyota holds up better than most, if not all.
