Anyone ever drink port?

So... over the past several years I have really gotten into wine. At a tasting I had a port sample a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. So I started looking around... now most ports (if they're a vintage rather than a late bottle vintage) are bloody expensive. I happened upon a 2000 vintage Sivals for $28. Now, from reading I know that 2000 was a very good year for wine... so I talked to a sommelier friend and asked him about the port. He hadn't ever heard of it, but said if I found a 2000 vintage port for $28 to buy it and buy it now. So I did. I bought four bottles about 2 years ago.

The sommelier suggested I do this: wait until 2005/2006 to open any of the bottles. Then wait till 2010/2011 and open another. Then at 2015/2016 open the other two. That way I'll have two bottles when they are at their peak and the other two bottles I'll get to taste as they mature.

Last week we opened the first bottle. Holy shit, that stuff was amazing. I've had several different ports, but never a vintage. Most were tawny ports but I had a few LBVs. There is a MAJOR difference.

I like port pretty well. The best one I've ever had is Taylor Fladgate (10yr). It's high dollar too.....well about $28-30. There are older varieties too, that are really expensive. A good cheap port is Clocktower. Australian I think.

I like tawney port okay, but have never tried a vintage one. Right now, on the rare occasions when I buy expensive booze it is for a good bottle of wine or a single-malt scotch.

That must be a LBV or a Tawny port... a 10-year-old port that is only $28 is not a vintage. Those are the ones most people are familiar with because they're not REALLY expensive. I'm tellin' you... buy a vintage port sometime. I was amazed at how much better it was than what I was used to.

At the recomendation of my wine merchant I have bought each of my kids a bottle of their birth year vintage ports.

As luck would have it each year one of my kids were born was a good vintage.

The plan is to have a big dinner when the kids turn 21 and open the bottle after dinner.

Wine makes me giggle. Other than that, I don't know anything about it, except for I like white wine over red.

I've never had port, but my friend is big into wine. I'll have to recommend it.
