Places you MUST check out in San Francisco????

I'm going to Web2.0 Expo in San Francisco at the Moscone Center on April 15-18 and am gonna be there from Sat-Sat... with Thurs and Fri free days to do whatever...

So, Im thinking hitting the Giants / St Louis game on Thursday and rooting for the Giants. Also thinking about Alcatraz.

Anyone have any good links that you could point me at so that I can create an festivities event list.

Some have said Fishermans Wharf... Chinatown...

never been to San Fran, so Im looking forward to it.

Things I remember in SF that were cool. Been awhile, so my spelling may be off a bit:

Coit Tower: Remember the scene in Dirty Harry under the big cross? I think that was in Davidson Park, which is close to Coit Tower. Coit Tower has a great view of the city.

Haight-Asbury: Hippie Central. Peace love dope!

Ghiradelli Square: West Coast version on Hershey Chocolate. Tasty!

SF Giants Ballpark (Pac Bell Park) Cool stadium right on the water.

Golden Gate Bridge/Alcatraz/Golden Gate Park

SF Art Gallery: In a really cool park, beautiful setting.

Presidio: Old Army fort very close to the Golden Gate Bridge. Cool monument called the Palace of the Legion of honor.

Fishermen's Wharf: Great seafood. Check out the seals hanging out.

Lombard St. Bring your skateboard!

Cable Cars: Gotta ride one just for fun.

Coolest places to stay: Huntington Hotel, Palace Hotel, Nob Hill Hotel.

Stay out of Oakland. It's a dark and evil place. The People's Republic of Berkeley is a cool college town.

Have fun, take a lotta money. You'll definitely need it.
I really like San Francisco. Been there like 4 times in the past 10 years. This is a good list. Some of my favorites are:

* Alcatraz
* Fisherman's Wharf
* Lombard Street
* The homes used for the outside shots on "Full House"

Okay, just kidding about that last one, but it is there.

Also, there's an area on the outer edge of the city with a much higher altitude. I think they call it the twin peaks, others call it the city's ta ta's. If you'd like a good, ariel view of the city, go there.

Finally, you can not leave San Francisco until you've eaten at The Cliff House (http://www.cliffhouse.com). GREAT food, GREAT atmosphere. Go there for dinner though, not lunch.

Open since 1849, today's diners can still eat like a gold prospector at this nostalgic San Francisco landmark.

I would eat every meal at this place if I could. The food is great and I don't think you can find a better place to experience SF culture. It is very near Haight Ashbury. http://www.sfgate.com/traveler/guide...s/haight.shtml
That was one of the places the wife and I ate when we went to SF for our 10th wedding anniversary in 2002. It was very good. Not fancy, not ridiculously expensive, just really good food.

Get your tickets for Alcatraz now-they are usually sold out. The Zoo is nice, a boat ride around the bay is awesome too. China town is very cool-go to a place with no tourist if you want authentic food. Fishermans warf, plus there is a home tour that is cheap. Lots to do- the nightlife rocks too.

Chinatown is a trippy place, I'd definitely recommend checking it out. I'm not sure I'd eat anything there though. It's been a while since I was out there, but I seem to remember being able to ride the cable cars from somewhere near Fisherman's Wharf to Chinatown.

Like people have said, Fisherman's Wharf is very touristee, ie, not much to see. However, you have to go so you can say you went, and if you go to Alcatraz, you'll be there already. Plus, if you like seafood, I'm sure there are some good places to eat.

Whatever you do, don't look the bums in the eye, because if YOU DO, they will most assuredly shake you down. They get very aggressive, even verbally abusive with you using psiops to get to you emotionally. They literally wear you down for a buck.

Now the ones who entertain with a bit of music or a juggling act are earning their tokes so give commensurately.

Regardless of how nice it is at 3:00 p.m., make absodamlutely sure you have a sweater ready as soon as the marine layer inverts and heads in somewhere between 4 and 4:30 in the afternoon, otherewise, be prepaired to freeze your ass off.

The view at the Cliff House is good but the food isn't. Our zoo is pretty lame too. (Although a zoo keeper got her arm bit off a couple months ago feeding a tiger.)

If you like sushi Sanraku is the best sushi in the city. There is one in the Metreon right across from the Moscone Center.

North Beach is the Italian district and most places are good. The best is Tratorria Contadina. It is right next to China Town so if you want to shop China Town and don't trust the restaurants it is a good place to go after.

If you go to Fishermans Wharf buy your crab from the street vendors. It is 1/2 the price. If you go after 4 PM you can take it up to Lou's (Blues Bar) because they don't serve food. Great bar and music.

When in the Fishermans Wharf area go to the Buena Vista (it is where the Irish Coffee was invented.) Also, find the Bushman.

Take the bay cruise. Alcatraz is interesting but it takes a long time. GG bridge is a must. Muir woods is very cool if you have the time. The trees are some of the tallest on earth (the tallest living organism is a Sequoia up the coast.)

You will be disappointed with the Silicon Valley. If you drive down 101 you will see Intel and Google on the side of the road but you will drive an hour to see a bunch of un-impressive buildings. It is kind of like Corporate Woods.

You would be better off driving an hour north and going to Napa - Sonoma and having the best wine in the world.

My suggestion would be to go to a concert at the Fillmore if there is a show in town. The history in that place is unbelievable.

I would also go the Haight Ashbury. After you walk around and check out the head shops you can have the best brisket I have ever had. It is in the lower Haight which is kind of sketchy neighborhood (that is always where the best BBQ is.) Memphis Minnies.

Twin Peaks does have a cool view. Other cool views are (top of the Marriott across from Moscone, Carnelian Room and Harry Dentons Starlight Room.)

You mentioned gentlemans clubs. One of the best in the country must be Mitchell Brothers. It will cost an arm and a leg to get in. They don't serve booze. However, I have read in the paper that the police have a hands-off policy on policing the place.

It is a legandary where in the 60's or 70's one of the brothers shot the other. They might have shot "Behind The Green Door" there too.

Take a cab though because the neighborhood gets very bad in the blocks appraoching the club.

Giants stadium is very cool. But don't root for the Giants. Dodgers rule! The ferry building (Not the castro) near the ballpark is a cool place. They just remodeled it. It is at the end of Market.

If you want to ride the cable car and there is a line go up 2 blocks to the 1st cable car stop. They do not fully load the cars and you can board without waiting in line. (Between Offarrel and Geary on the Powell St line.)

Other restaurants to visit:
Slanted Door (Vietnamese)
Harris (the $65 Kobe is my favorite meal)
Swans Oyster Depot

I was in San Francisco once for business. I was walking on a street - and looked ahead - and saw two young guys holding hands.

It was then that I realized that there are actually ghey people out there.

I walked in another direction so that I wouldn't get ill looking at the two and thinking what they were going to do later that night.
