Hello All,

I hate networking. It is the Jake O'Connell of technology for me. Currently, I have a three PC setup. All are running Windows 7 Premium and are on the same Homegroup. Wireless N for the laptop and a wireless N bridge for the HTPC (w/ a gigabyte switch). Wireless N router w/ a gigabyte switch and a gigabyte card on the PC hooked up w/ a wired connection.

I get about 100MB/minute on a file transfer in network. Also, when streaming WMP content from one PC to another I get tremendously long hangs when scrolling through the song list (which isn't that large, only about 500 or so). I've disabled my A/V firewall, and I've read about the myths of IPv6 and RDC disabling and how they don't actually work.

Any ideas?

It's the bridge. Very slow file transfer from Desktop to Laptop using the bridge.

What do you all recommend? Would moving it help at all? It sent info to my laptop fine, but it was a few feet away at the time. Firmware update? Just replace it?

Unless there's a known issue, I would update the firmware. It's not likely to do anything.

Repositioning is probably your best bet to start with. Have you tried running inSSIDer on your laptop while it's sitting right next to the bridge? I'd be interested to know if position (or possibly interference) is a factor.

The bridge is essentially a client device, you can't see it using inSSIDer.

Does your bridge have a signal strength meter built into the GUI?

My intent here was really just to test your laptop in the bridge's location and make sure it works. That would tend to point to the bridge itself, meaning repositioning it or looking for sources of interference would be a waste of time.

However, if the laptop wireless, while sitting where the bridge is, experience a similar issue, that might suggest an environmental issue. So at that point, repositioning the bridge might be fruitful.

I switched the bridge over to AP mode, put the laptop next to it, and here is the signal strength:

The strength would bounce from about -33 to -55 w/ little in-between.

Right next to the router (which is next to the desktop, the source of the files I wanted to stream) our network shows as -25 and the Bridge is -61

Yeah, that's definitely a problem.

Do me a favor. Turn off the AP, and with your laptop sitting right next to it, run your file transfer test again.

Just wanna make sure you don't have an environmental issue right there at that spot (although from the looks of that inSSIDer you don't).

If you're too close to the router, you might have an issue. The signal radiates out in kind of a donut shape. It's best to test signal strength from a few feet away rather than right next to it.

The fact that the bridge has a better signal strength there might point to a directional issue or something else that's inhibiting traffic flow just in one direction.

Have you tried your file test FROM the HTPC to somewhere else?

why is it on channel 5+1? is that a 20/40mhz thing?

Yeah. Mentioned in an earlier post. Works just as quickly. It's only the downstream to the HTPC that's the issue.

I'm almost certain it's an interference issue.

I ran the file transfer test on the laptop with it sitting up on the stand part of my entertainment center. The file flew. As the file was going, I held the laptop's screen (where the antenna is, as you all know) down by the bridge (which was off) and performance tanked.

Yeah the DAP-1522 is 2.4Ghz N.
