**** it.
Let him play out this season. If he puts up pro bowl numbers against this schedule, then sign him to a big contract. Otherwise franchise him.

Smith isn't a young QB in his second or third year. If you're a GM and pay your QB top 5 money just because he's a FA you're a $3itty GM and a fool. Manning got Manning money because he's Manning. Brady got Brady money because, that's right, he's Tom Brady. Smith is getting Smith money because he's ****ing Alex Smith. I'd be shocked if Dorsey suddenly got stupid with the checkbook. He's drafting people for the sole purpose of replacing high $$$ talent currently on the roster. He let almost all our FA's walk because he didn't want to pay any of them...

Okay let's do the math...
6 year extension. That means a 7 year contract because he still has one year on the current. 126 / 7 = Yes... 18 million. Now that's with the incentives. 110/ 7= 15.7 million. that's without them. 61 Million guaranteed. This bodes well for the Alex Smith contract, imo. I expect to see something in the 15-16m range. |

Saying it because it's true. He's locked up til 2021. How many seasons is that? His contract is still the same..110 to 126.

If you have a QB that is a FA and you believe he can play at a high level for X amount of years then you should sign him to a contract accordingly. Just because this will be Alex's last contract doesn't mean he isn't worth a contract similar to the QBs that are around him in quality of play. Dorsey has overpaid for several of our players. He has not be frugal by any means.

A fair contract. You don't have to overpay to have average play. In fact doing so is exactly why this team has been $#it for years. We lowball our true talent and then overpay for average players...

It doesn't change the deal, but it changes the average per year.

Our only choice is a FA QB worse than Smith or drafting a QB. I have my hopes and doubts about us drafting a QB in the first. I sure don't want a QB any worse than Smith. We are kind of caught in a catch 22 type of situation.

Teams don't let franchise QB's get to FA and they don't trade them for 2nd round picks. The only way to get one is to grow some balls and draft/develop one. To be great at anything in life, you have to be willing to take some risks. Sure, maybe you whiff on the pick, but you're guaranteed to be average if you never take the chance. |

Smith is not young. We did not draft him. What is he going to argue? We won't win a playoff game without him? He has no leverage. The 49'ers didn't think he was worth top money. We didn't think he was worth a long term deal or top money last year. What part of a very meh year would change anyone's mind?...

You're living in a fantasy world if you think this deal doesn't improve Smith's position. |
