The Chiefs Are Rocking, and KC's Watching

darren rovell ‏@darrenrovell 1h

72% of the TVs that were on in KC last Sunday were watching Chiefs-Giants, the highest local % for any game.

Amazing what extinguishing a dumpster fire, hiring competent people, and winning a few games has done for the Chiefs.

Amazing how quickly things have turned around. Not saying that a "correction" in enthusiasm won't eventually come, but this city was ready to embrace a legitimate NFL team.

At this pace, Marty, Eric, Flop, and everyone at SOC should be considered for the ring of honor.

It's why I always disagree with the devout Royals fans that contend that Kansas City is a baseball town.

The hell it is - it took two games for KC to be loudly and obviously Pro-Chiefs again. Arrowhead got back to sellout style immediately. I'd imagine the wait-list for season tickets will be in effect again by 2014. The town instantly rallied around it's Chiefs.

Meanwhile Royals fans still trickled into Kaufman despite the relatively sustained success. The buzz around town still wasn't 1/2 what it is when the Chiefs have a nice 4-game stretch to start the season.

Kansas City is a football town - period. It has a decent baseball fanbase, but it's nothing compared to the love this team has for the Chiefs. It takes only a glimmer of hope for KC to be fired up about its Chiefs again. You'd damn near need an AL Pennant before the town got really excited about the Royals again.

Attendance for the Royals didn't bounce back like it deid for the Chiefs, with the exception of the Boston series (which includes a lot of Red Sox fans) and the last homestand (which was a legitimate bounce. However, TV ratings for Royals games were WAY up this year.

That said, I don't think there's any question that KC is a Chiefs-first town.

Couldn't agree more.

Royals fans always said, "play good baseball, and we'll fill the K."

They played good baseball this year, and averaged 55% of capacity.

Yup.

Casual baseball fans wanted an excuse to not go sit in the hot sun for 3 hours and watch a slow game. I get it. But they'd better not sit around and act like they're these hardcore fans that just don't go because the Royals suck.

They ended up in the bottom 5 in overall attendance this year and bottom 10 in %capacity despite having a homegrown team that actually plays a pretty exciting brand of baseball. They demanded a winner - the got it. They even got a winner that's fun to watch in a park with a bunch of pretty snazzy amenities. They still didn't go.

In the end, Kansas City is a pretty average baseball town. If you build a perennial contender, they'll turn out and get you about 80% full (I'd say they're like Cincinnati in that regard). If not, they'll stay home and blame it on the team.

But KC loves its football, man. It's a great football town.

Attendance for the Giants game was listed at 73,386.

The Dallas game listed at 76,592. Capacity is 79,451.

Last year's numbers were inflated, this year's are the real deal.

There were single seats available, but no large chunks that I saw anywhere in the stadium.

It really takes robust ST sales to get rid of all those single seats. At that point the walkup sales fill in the gaps. When you don't have that many STs built up yet, the walkups tend to get shoved in piecemeal and you have a bunch of those straggler seats throughout.

I figure we'll have that all year but with increased ST sales next year, we'll be getting right back to Arrowhead of the late 90s.

It's amazing how quickly Arrowhead rebounded. Having only been a ST holder for the last 4 seasons (this is my 5th), I didn't realize how desperately the town wanted to get back out there. I figured it would be a slow re-build.

Nope - they were right back at full throat. This town desperately wants to be out there if they have just a tiny little bit to grab onto.

Does this number reflect tickets sold? Your next post on attendance does not equal 97.9% attendance.
