IMHO, our running game woes can be attributed to two factors:
1. Tait, Szott's replacements + an aging Grunhard. Our OL just isn't what it used to be: Tait is a BRILLIANT pass-blocking OLT, but isn't quite agile enough to be an outstanding run-blocker. Willis & Blackshear are good pass-blockers, but inept when it comes to run-blocking. Grunhard is getting 'long in the tooth' - he is playing at a this high level on sheer will alone (sadly, his body is giving way). If you notice: when we run the ball to the right side of our line(Shields & Riley), we usually get 3.5+ y/p/c. To the left & dead-center: 1.5-3 max; or a loss. Solution: throw the ball more! Run to the right & throw flares & screens to the left. We cannot continue to 'bang our heads into the wall'... that would be counter-productive. 2. The committee. Pick a starter & STAY WITH HIM FOR THE ENTIRE GAME! Ask any all-pro NFL RB & they'll tell you they MUST have at least 10 carries before they 'get into a rythm'. Today, Moreau looks good - then we pull him out & don't see him again. TRich tears off a couple, then we hand it to someone else. Same goes for Anders & Cloud. Just pick one & let him succeed/fail. If the latter, then replace him next week. This personnel shuffling is absurd. [This message has been edited by HC_Chief (edited 10-15-2000).] |

I hate to criticize our offensive line since those are "my guys" but something isn't right. I'll never say anything negative about Grunhard, just can't do it. However, I have noticed an inability to run to the left. Tait and the Willis/Blackshear combo must take some of the blame.
I think that 58 yards rushing for a KC team is a clear indicator that several things need adjusting. AZ |
