i don't know about all this "must choose" crap
but right now you have to go with most potiential 1. Johnson,Bell,Fox top phyically potiential group 2. (my personal favorite) johnson, grigsby,Bell all 3 are outstanding athletic guys and have tremendous potiential. Bell has shown himself a good pass rusher from the outside. Johnson is great at working in space and chasing stuff down. Grigsby is the blue collar, insane MLB i like to have but this is all based on "hope" and potiential but we've see negatives from other players already: fujita is too much finesse for me barber is ok ... but i've seen nothing explosive about his play mitchell seems to have the football instincts of a ground squirrel maz will always be limited by his lack of speed

I'm hoping Barber is healthy. He's not nearly as bad as people make him out to be. He was a star in Philly with some talent around. He played well in KC even though half the time he had a busted hand and wore wrapping that looked like a 16oz boxing glove on it.
You need at least one LB with experience in the scheme and who is not adjusting to a new position. I'd like to see Johnson, Bell and Barber.

I am of the feeling that each linebacker must earn their spot. I as big a Boomer fan as any, growing up with him, but if he doesn't earn his spot he shouldn't be awarded the job. Same with DJ. If for some reason he can't beat out Scott Fujita, then he doesn't deserve to start. With all that being said, I'd hope DJ lives up to potential and takes Fujita's spot as I feel Fujita is a vastly over-rated linebacker. Bell will start because of his contract, but also the fact that he will be the most talented. The other spot is open to Barber, Fox, & Mitchell and I would expect to see Fox there by the time the regular season opens as Barber won't be ready and Mitchell couldn't fight his way out of a paper sack.
I feel that when everyone is healthy our LB situation might become somewhat of a strength as we would be two, potentially three, deep at every spot. Sam: DJ, Fujita Mike: Bell, Boomer, Maz, Scanlon Will: Barber, Fox, Mitchell The nice thing is, Bell, Boomer, and Mitchell can play all three spots which provides flexibility in Nickle and Dime situations. |

I was looking for your thoughts along this line.
I'm thinking Caver will be cut...... but who knows. Option # 1 Must include Barber ROLB ...Barber,Fox MLB ...Bell,Mitchell,Scanlon ( Until Grigsby proves otherwise) LOLB ...Fujita,Johnson Option # 2 Must include Maz ROLB ...Johnson,Fox MLB ...Bell, Maz,Scanlon ( Until Grigsby proves otherwise) LOLB ...Fujita,Mitchell Option # 3 Must include both Maz and Barber ROLB ...Barber,Fox MLB ...Bell,Maz,Mitchell LOLB ...Fujita, Johnson Option # 4 Neither Barber or Maz is on active roster. ROLB ... Johnson,Caver ( maybe Grigsby ) MLB ... Bell, Mitchell,Scanlon ( Until Grigsby proves otherwise) LOLB ...Fujita,Fox In all likelyhood, I see it coming down to these options. I do believe that Maz is history. I do see Johnson as a starter ASAP.

I don't think Barber or Maz will make a Chief's 53 man roster again. Football is a replacement business and like all Chiefs, someone will take their place.
Since Bell hasn't played a 4-3 in the pros, any of the three LB positions is going to be new to him. I think Bell's "game" is closer to Chad Brown's than other MLBs that left Pittsburg. Like Brown, Bell would be an extremely effective blitzer at ROLB and form a great partnership with RDE Jared Allen, imo. Mitchell's late season play earn's him a chance to make Chiefs management look competent for using a second round pick on him. Management rarely passes up an opportunity to look competent. Mitchell returning at MLB in his Dec '04' form is preferable to new starters at every position, imo. If DJ uses his tremendous athletic ability and football instincts to carry out his assignments with the greatest proficiency possible instead of free lancing, he'll make a lot of big plays and create a lot of big play opportunities for his teammates. If he starts free lancing, he'll be standing on the sideline listening to a lecture about discipline, responsibilty, and team play. I think he's smart enough to figure out that team play will earn him and a lot of his teammates a lot of pro bowl votes. |
