NCAA investigating whether Johnny Manziel was paid for autographs

http://tracking.si.com/2013/08/04/nc...el-autographs/

The NCAA is investigating whether Johnny Manziel was paid for signing autographs in January, ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” is reporting.

The Heisman Trophy-winning Texas A&M quarterback agreed to sign hundreds of autographs on photos and sports memorabilia in exchange for a five-figure flat fee during his trip to Miami for the BCS National Championship Game, according to the report.

Manziel reportedly met with autograph broker Drew Tieman at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Jan. 6.

From the report:

Three sources said Manziel signed photographs, footballs, mini football helmets and other items at the request of an autograph broker named Drew Tieman. Two sources, who are aware of the signing arrangement, told “Outside the Lines” that Tieman approached Manziel on Jan. 6 when he landed at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport to attend the game between Alabama and Notre Dame the next day.
After that meeting, three sources said, Manziel, accompanied by his friend and personal assistant Nathan Fitch, visited Tieman’s residence and signed hundreds of items in the main room of the apartment despite the fact that there were many people in the room. Before Manziel left South Florida, after taking in the title game, he signed hundreds of autographs more, one source said.

NCAA assistant director of enforcement James Garland contacted Tieman and at least one person associated with the signings in June to ask about Manziel-autographed items that were on sale on eBay, according to the report.

Manziel could be ruled ineligible to play if the investigation finds that he violated NCAA Bylaw 12.5.2.1 — “accepting money for promoting or advertising the commercial sale of a product or service.”

The investigation continues a tumultuous offseason for “Johnny Football,” who has been under fire for his partying habits, which may have contributed to his early departure from the Manning Passing Academy in July.

I love how they say that the NCAA has no evidence to prove Manziel accepted money. Then why is he sitting. Him sitting for even a play is proof of his guilt in some sort of way. There's alot of middle ground I suppose, but it is a joke. You're saying that an athlete will only get busted if he doesn't make the University and NCAA enough money. Nothing for Cam Newton, nothing for Manziel, Bush got off until he had to forfeit his Heisman, but Dez Bryant gets nailed to the wall over lunch with Deion Sanders.... F@#$ the NCAA and their bullshit preferential treatment. I hope Manziel gets lit the fugg up against Alabama.

It was stated that he was being suspended to send him a message that signing autographs could lead to people making money off them although it isn't him. And it's more of a "that's not right " thingy

And Clowney over 300 items with a broker = no suspension. Seems right. Instead of suspending all of them, they use a minimal suspension against the poster boy to send a message about college athletes and associations with the scumbag brokers. I don't have a problem with that.

Photo shows Manziel signing

Updated: September 13, 2013, 5:57 PM ET
By Darren Rovell | ESPN.com

A photo of Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel signing for South Florida autograph broker Drew Tieman in early January has been obtained by ESPN.

It is the first visual representation of Manziel signing for Tieman. In the photo, which two sources have confirmed as legitimate, Manziel, in a long-sleeve maroon shirt, is standing over a covered pool table signing photos of his image while Tieman oversees the process.
The photo, according to sources, was taken in the Fort Lauderdale apartment in which Tieman was living at the time.

Heisman winner Johnny Manziel is shown signing photos of his image as South Florida autograph broker Drew Tieman, left, oversees the process.

ESPN attempted to reach Tieman through his company and was told he was not immediately available for comment. Texas A&M has not made Manziel available for interviews this week prior to the No. 6 Aggies' game against top-ranked Alabama in College Station. Neither Manziel's attorney, Jim Darnell, nor a Texas A&M official returned calls seeking comment.

Last month, sources told ESPN's "Outside the Lines" that Manziel signed more than 1,100 autographs for Tieman over a two-day period in South Florida while in Miami for the BCS title game. Sources say Tieman paid more than $10,000 to authenticate those autographs with James Spence Authentication, whose officials told ESPN that they stand by their opinion that every signature is authentic.

All told, sources told "Outside the Lines" that Manziel signed at least 4,400 autographs for Tieman, two brokers in Connecticut at the Walter Camp Awards and Kevin Freistat, an autograph broker who had at least one signing session with Manziel in South Florida in January and another in Houston later in the month.

In late August, the NCAA and Texas A&M released a joint statement that said an NCAA investigation was unable to find evidence that Manziel received payments for signing the autographs "based on information provided by Manziel."

Manziel did not play in the first half of the team's season opener against Rice because he violated NCAA bylaw 12.5.2.1, which states that student-athletes cannot allow products with their names and likenesses to be sold even if they do not profit from it.

This is news? Lol. You'd think they'd give him a chair for signing thousands of items.

It's over, Darren. You lost.
