HP Buys Palm...

Guess they needed movement into the mobile market, could be a good deal for all.

HP has just announced that it's acquiring Palm to the tune of $1.2 billion, which works out to $5.70 per share of Palm common stock. The deal is planned to close by July 31, which marks the end of HP's third fiscal quarter of the year. Current Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein is "expected to remain with the company," though it's not said in what capacity. Press release after the break. There'll be a call to discuss the acquisition in more detail (well, we hope in more detail) at 5PM ET, so we'll keep you abreast as we learn more

I'm not sure if I like it. I LOVE Palm, but I think HP is meh.

I wish more people appreciated Palm. I can't understand why people aren't using the Palm Pre. It's easily the best phone available right now for business. And WebOS... Nothing touches it.

I like Palm as well, had a Treo and Centro, wife has Pre.
Now that I've gone Android though I'll never go back to the way Palm is now. The app market alone has won me over for Android and I'm only on 1.5.

Anyway, I have a relatively unhealthy (and I'll admit it, pretty unfounded) hatred of HP. I don't like this much.

I'm disappointed as well, I've always liked Palm as well. HP could really push it by bringing in more devices into the WebOS fold, which would be cool.

My favorite is the new suggested name that I saw, HPalm.

HP is golden to me. I called them up to fix my $600 laptop, and after 2 unsuccessful attempts they gave me a brand new $1200 laptop.

Yup, and that is what HP sounds like they are looking to do...

The word is that Palm's existing hardware roadmap is basically untouched at this point by this acquisition, but the good news on the HP end of things is that the company sees webOS as a "prized asset," and they intend to "scale it across multiple connected devices."

Palm was always a day late and a dollar short. HP made an interesting purchase. I say interesting because numerous companies passed after looking at them. HTC was a front runner and actually made sense, but passed after looking at their books.

I can see that - I have no opinion of HP one way or another - but HTC is spread out quite a bit ATM

HTC never made any sense to me, they have so much already invested in Windows and Android phones that they would have been stuck promoting their competitors for a good long while. The only reason for HTC to buy palm would be for the patent portfolio to protect itself against the Apple suit. But they were able to make a cheaper deal with MS that should help them out. I actually can't think of anyone that makes more sense then HP, with its major competitors Apple and Dell both in the tablet and phone market they need to jump in to make sure that they have a little bit of a head start.

HTC made sense in the sense it could have an Apple-like vertical product line. That is, controlling the product's hardware down to the software.

Android sort of already offer's them that ability since it is open source.

That's actually where I think there's currently a problem. I love open source but when handset makers start adding their own flare to the OSes, things get jumbled. It makes upgrades hard because upgrades would break things like HTC's Sense UI.
