Your doing photo editing/video editing. Yes, you do want the hyperthreading. your handicapping yourself otherwise.

No video editing, photo editing in Lightroom.

What does NOT having the hyper threading do? Sorry, I've looked at what it's supposed to do, but I haven't noticed any handicapping with my current i5 laptop, which is a lesser chip than the one I mentioned above.

Really, not trying to be argumentative, just trying to be educated and make a better decision. I'm not the type of guy that needs the best just because it's the best.

Hyperthreading is going to speed up the rendering process of editing stuff like photo's and video's. If you are just doing light photo editing you can probably get away with an i5, it just wont be as smooth or fast as an i7 (we're talking tenth's of seconds here when it comes to photos). I recommend an i7 for any kind of editing but it's up to you and your wallet.

If price is really an issue, you might consider looking at AMD and the FX 8320/8350.

Well do you want a desktop version of your laptop or a new, faster desktop that will last you a number of years? How much time are you really spending in Lightroom?

I was also on the fence about an i7 or an i5 last year and went with the i5 because I don't spend enough time doing tasks that can take advantage of it and spent the money on more RAM instead.

Unless you are overclocking save the money and don't get an unlocked CPU (K models), especially if you are going to stay with the H97 motherboards as the only real difference between them and a slightly more expensive Z97 is that they dont support OC.

- Will onboard graphics be able to push the 4k monitor? Would it be able to handle two of them if you add one in the future?
- Your initial 128GB SSD is pretty slim. I'd look into something a little bigger, even though you clearly plan on having a lot of data on platter drives.
- I think Lightroom supports hyper threading. Since you said that Lightroom was going to be a primary use, I'd go for it.

Not sure about two monitors, but I know the cheap GFX on my laptop has no problems with the 4K monitor. That said, if at some point I decide to add another monitor and on board can't handle, I can add a GFX card. Easy add on later if I need it.

I agree with the system drive; planning to go 256GB on the SSD.

This hyperthreading is new to me... my i5 laptop has no problems with Lightroom, which is why I wonder if I need the i7. The side-by-side comparisons just don't seem like it's worth the extra $100.

I'm also thinking of backing off to 8GB of RAM to start with. Again, easy add on later.

Seems like you're cutting corners, but I don't know what your budget is.

Nothing specifically in mind, but I am trying to keep costs down.

If it was me, I'd wait a bit, save some more dough and get a proper i7 set up.

In two years, you'll be much happier that you have an i7, which should still be plenty efficient enough to run the current programs, as opposed to an i5, which may have a little more difficulty.

IMO, it's always best to purchase the fastest CPU, memory, etc. or face doing it all over again too soon.

Good luck!

OOC, what would this rig with 8GB RAM and the i5 I mentioned and the 256GB SSD run as a prefab box?

So I ended up not getting anything at the time, but I'm kind of back in that mode. I'm seriously thinking about a Mac Mini - they're reasonably priced, and it looks like I can get a decently hot machine for <$1500. The one I have configured right now:

2.8GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5
16GB 1600MHz LPDDR3 SDRAM
256GB Flash system drive (I'll buy some external Thunderbolt or USB3 storage)

Anyone have any experience with the Mac Minis?

Mac Mini's from like 2012 were great machines. Intel i7 quad core, decent memory expansion and so on. Now, they're overpriced and underpowered.

You can build a great i7 4790 Z97 Pro machine for under $1k, which would allow you to upgrade to the next Intel CPU once they're released. "Building" a computer could not be any more simple and I'd highly recommend a quad core i7 over a dual core.

Macs are overpriced, underpowered, and undersupported.

There is literally no reason to buy a mac over a PC. Any reason someone wants to come up with is wrong.
