What's crazy is that Smith just came up on sirius sports radio. One thing is for sure...there are are 1000 different beliefs on when to extend Alex and how much to pay him. He is very polarizing. From some believing he is long term and worth millions to some saying he is average. Its crazy.

Nothing new in there, but why post the equivalent of Bleacher Report?

Kansas City Chiefs Comfortable at Quarterback, but Must Leave Options Open

Yahoo Contributor Network By Jeremy Sickel

The hiring of head coach Andy Reid last offseason was just the first of many big chips to fall into place that allowed the Kansas City Chiefs to further distance the organization from the failed previous regime. And the leading item on his agenda was to correct the issues the team had under center.

Reid and new general manager John Dorsey made it a point to stabilize the quarterback position in Kansas City. Doing so consisted of a complete out-with-the-old-and-in-with-the-new operation.

Like former GM Scott Pioli back when he was hired in 2009 when he traded for Matt Cassel, Reid and Dorsey's first big move was bringing in their own starting quarterback.

Alex Smith was acquired from the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for what ended up being two second-round draft picks. Days later, the Chiefs signed Chase Daniel to a three-year contract. And Tyler Bray was brought in as a rookie free agent just after the draft.

Just like that, Kansas City went from Cassel, Brady Quinn and Ricky Stanzi to Smith, Daniel and Bray -- all guys handpicked by Reid and Dorsey early on in their new tenure. Addressing the quarterback position with such promptness and purpose allowed for a somewhat seamless offseason, sans a few other big-ticket items -- but nothing that most other organizations also had to deal with.

With no huge decisions to make this offseason regarding the most important position in all of sports (as far as who is currently on the roster), the Chiefs can rest a little easier in preparation for the 2014 campaign. That does not mean, however, that Reid and Dorsey should ignore Kansas City's current quarterback situation completely.

The roles are clearly set: Smith is the starter, Daniel is the backup and Bray is the project third-stringer. But there is flexibility within the rotation, and also discussions of a long-term extension on the docket.

Daniel and Bray might be interchangeable with another offseason under Bray's belt. Should he develop the way he is expected to, the second-year quarterback could move into the backup role -- more than likely pushing Daniel off the roster, considering his contract.

What the Chiefs could look to do in this case is move Daniel for a draft pick.

Reid's history shows that there will likely be a new quarterback brought in every year via the draft. With the starter set, any new signal-caller would be used to push Daniel and/or Bray for playing time -- keeping everyone under the mindset that there is no room for complacency.

To solidify the future at the quarterback position in Kansas City, however, the organization must first decide on what to do with Smith moving forward -- who is signed for only next season, but at a very cheap $7.5 million.

Do the Chiefs wait until next offseason to talk long-term extension with Smith, or is that settled prior to the start of this season? There are those in favor of either scenario, but there are also those against signing the former No. 1 pick to a new contract altogether.

Either way, Kansas City must decide on Smith's future with the team soon.

No one can deny, however, that this is a much more favorable circumstance than Kansas City has seen recently under center. And keeping the quarterback position as a top priority is key to sustained success in the NFL.

Nothing ground breaking, but a good read. I don't see a need to rush to extend yet. Let's see another few games first.

Alex Smith straight up said he wouldn't mind playing out his contract and even added "I'm not going anywhere, this is my place".

I honestly don't see a reason they SHOULD extend him if he is fine either way...but I can think of at least 10 reasons why we shouldn't.

He can play himself into a bigger contract. This may be his place, but it can become a pissing match.

Cassel, Quinn, Stanzi

Pioli thought it was ok to go that route. That's all one needs to remember if anyone ever wants to give that guy credit for anything...

From literally EVERYTHING I've heard said about Alex Smith, he doesn't even want a big contract.

I've listened to radio pieces he did -recently- where he basically says as much. Says he is a team player and that isn't just talk. He was saying that in response to questions about what he might want in terms of a contract.
