Good Austin area Restaurant?

I have a friend who just moved he and his family back from Asia. They're living in (near) Austin, TX (Cedar Park).

I want to send his fam a gift certificate to a great place to eat nearby.

Any suggestions?

It can be either a family place or someplace special for the parents only.

If you think that is good BBQ, you are an idiot. The Salt Lick isn't even top 10 in Austin much less Texas. Rudy's, the chain that is also a convenience store and gas station is better. The Salt Lick is for tourists and idiots.

If you want to go that far outside of town for BBQ, go to Lockhart and get Kreuz's. (still not even close to as good as a mediocre KC BBQ joint)

I haven't been, it was featured on Man vs Food though and named the tastiest BBQ in America by the Travel Channel.

Some of my favorite spots in Austin are as follows...

Green Pastures - awesome setting and great food
http://greenpasturesrestaurant.com/

Chez Nous - best French restaurant and amazingly nice staff
http://cheznousaustin.com/

Ranch 616
http://theranch616.com/

Moonshine
http://www.moonshinegrill.com/

The Emerald - a bit far outside of town but amazing atmosphere and food
http://www.irishemeraldrestaurant.com/

Curra's
http://www.currasgrill.com/

Koriente
http://www.koriente.com/ -cheap but surprisingly good

Casino El Camino (as featured on Diner, Dives and Driveins) BEST BURGER IN TOWN! Hell possibly best burger in Texas... it's a divey bar though
http://www.casinoelcamino.net/

AND FINALLY... THE BEST KEBABS IN AMERICA... you would be hard pressed to find a better kebab outside of the back alleys of Dublin... but it is a food truck, so I doubt they have gift certs.

I wouldn't go as far as calling it crap but it has been pretty disappointing whenever I have been. Mediocre and hardly worth the drive. Biggest problem might be their sauce.

OK, it's not inedible... but I can't name a SINGLE BBQ place in town that is worse... except for Stubbs...

Most of the food carts downtown are better. Far better.

There is always the Salt lick at Bergstrom.

I usually just get Rudy's off 360 whenever I'm in Austin. If you get lean brisket and ask for an end cut it's fairly good.

I have tried a few others. County Line which was OK and Lamberts which was highly disappointing.

Any suggestions of what BBQ place I should try next time I'm in Austin?

Rudys is delicious for a chain type place.

Luly's! It's right next to the Mega-Lo Mart.

Man vs. Food said some place in Texas was the tastiest BBQ? Really? Of course, that show is all about quantity and not quality. When they were in KC they went to some obscure BBQ joint that no one had ever heard of. They did have a big sandwich, though.

Reading Williams and Sonoma BBQ issue. They said Smitty's in Austin. Of course, they said BLVD in KC so not sure about the validity of their picks.

Not my choice unfortunately. It is a popular spot for personal and corporate events... If it wasn't for the craptastic food.. it actually has a lot of room and a nice layout.
