This is one thing that I've never understood.

Some smokers won't throw any regular garbage in the street, but they will pitch a 100 butts a day anywhere but the ashtray.

"Doubles the risk" is one of the healthnazis' favorite catchphrases - scares the shit out of the masses, but what it really means is "increases the odds of something bad happening from completely astronomical to merely astronomical."

I believe smokers have forgotten how bad it feels to breath smoke, how bad smoke smells, and how oppresive it feels to be in a room filled with smoke. It is not all about health effects. It also makes your clothing and hair stink. Frankly it is a filthy and nasty environment that smokers choose to live in but should not expect others to suffer so they can be convenienced. You really cannot say that about the guy sitting at the next table drinking a beer or a shot of tequila.

Maybe the can have one of those "studies" to show that that the meaning of doubles the risk is not really that.

The sad thing is how successful the healthnazis media terror campaign has been. One of my friends, who is pregnant, was talking about seeing another pregnant woman smoking, in pretty much the same way I would talk about a pedophile priest. Eating food is bad for you. Drinking the water is bad for you. Breathing the air is bad for you. There are studies that say so. Perhaps everyone who is willing to cast stones at other for their little vices, even though they are 100% perfectly legal, should stop eating, breathing and drinking becasue of these studies as well. That's the point.

Outside of Nevada (gee, wonder why) the death rates of people with cancer are much lower in the southwest and Cali.

Same on the other coast.

But not the midwest, where a $#itload of the rain falls and the rivers drain. Where all that lovely radioactive dust blasted into the atmosphere settles and falls.

Also happens to be where most of the farming is done. Pesticides sprayed.

Just a thought.

You have a very good point, and I totally agree with that. I quit for a few months a while back. It was then I realized how much it smelled, even if it was someone walking down the sidewalk with a cigarette nearby. I keep that in mind now when I decide where and when I'm going to light up. Unfortunately I'm in the minority and I feel like I'm suffering consequences for the assholes that don't give a shit for others.
